So me and Matthew have been hitting Idaho for the last few weeks as time allowed. This was to be my third long weekend there and his more than that. This hunt actually started last Saturday when I spent the day at the end of a ridge and across the valley there was a butte that had a lot of hunters and a ton of shots. When i met up with Matthew at noon and glassed across we talked about the wheat around that timber was the greenest in the entire area. So Sunday afternoon Matthew went in there and laid out in the wheat and saw a ton of does till dark. He went back on Tuesday and same thing and passed on another small buck. His assessment was that we had finally found the main herd and with the rut here that was where to be.
I had to go over for work on Thursday so the plan was to meet about 3 and get to it. We drove to the end of the road in the timber to the wheat and we walked up the hill about 300 yards. Matthew said 'Dad lay down right here and they will come over the hill right to you'. So that is what i did and he continued around the butte into some other wheat. After awhile a doe came out of the timer below me and started to feed. I kept an eye on her and all of a sudden her head jerked up and she took off - a buck right behind her and they were gone.
Kept watching and was looking below and when I turned my head a deer had just come over the rise right on top of me. As I looked through the scope it was a doe. I was still looking at her when I heard a shot around the butte and she looked that way and took a few steps towards me. Then another deer stepped right behind her. One look and I saw it was a good buck. Safety off aim and fire. Good hit and he went about 30 yards and went down. Then my phone buzzed and it was Matthew - Text - Buck Down! it was his shot that got the doe to move and pulled the buck the few steps for me to get the shot. Literately 2 bucks in 10 seconds.
We did not get them back to camp till after 9 as mine as a short drag out and his was forever away. It was really late by the time they were skinned out and we were able to get fed and cleaned up.
2 mulies and 2 whitetails for us. Deer done.
