How are you cooking them?  Looks like a lot of work (cleaning etc. etc.) for such small fish.  Are those the same as smelt?

It's pretty simple and fast if you have a few people. all you do is cut off head and run a finger to take out guts. the we just rub em in a little fish fry and fry em up. You can eat em whole with bones because theres so small but i usually just grab tail and pull spine out. They kinda taste like codfish IMO? anyways its fun to catch em and tasty to eat em!

they run in a few rivers in the world. nooksack is one of them they run once a year around this time and you take a dip net and scoop em or wait for them to run into the net and scoop em up. Kinda like smelt/candlefish

Where do you net for them? The beach? The river?

My grandpa was talking about how much he misses them and wants to get some for around thanksgiving....

I've only jigged for them, never gone netting

I used to get them from a buddys old man, those things are killer.I cook them the norske way though, there is so little guts, they get the flour/salt/pepper coating and then thrown in the oil and fried whole until done. The fillets peel right off and leave the rest.Cleaning the buggers is a PITA for the little amount of guts and I couldn't taste the difference between the cleaned ones or the ones cooked with guts and heads.Veterans day is typically the time they are running.
