Title: Bobcat down.... (Updated back from the tannery 5/11)
Post by: Stinkyrat on November 19, 2013, 06:17:01 PM
Hi guys!

Headed up hunting today and took down a fairly small bobcat, awesome nonetheless! The lady is not too happy with the idea of having mounted critters all over the house, so I'm thinking that pelting this guy would be a good idea? Do you have any recommended places I could send this to that are good and in WA state? I like to keep business in the local economy  :)

Any help would be great, thanks!

To answer a couple questions, this is a Westside bobcat (GMU 654) and took him down with the S&W. Still amazed with the accuracy that wheel gun has!

Edited to update: figured I'd post a quick update to the bobcat, its back from the tannery and at Peter's Taxidermy so I snapped a quick picture. Decided to have it rugged so it will be there till around August, about time to start hunting again. Felt pretty good about how it turned out so far, this was the first time I skinned out a larger animal ever.... think I'm ready to skin out an elk... :)

Little Willy's in Buckley did an awesome job on my bear year before last.  Might try him.

Most cats get murdered at the taxidermist.  Very few get it right, so make sure you check out their cat work before you commit.

Pretty tough to beat Charlie's Taxidermy. His cats have great detail. The best I have seen.

Thanks guys!

I'm just looking to pelt this, not doing a mount. I called Peter's taxidermy and a lady picked up even though it was 7pm, hope I didnt get them in the middle of dinner... thought it was just a business number  :(

Anyway they said it would be about $140 to do a pelt for the bobcat, I still need to get this sealed and then off to one of these fine folks to do the job.

Peters taxidermy. My top pick. That's were I dropped of my wood duck a few days ago and take all my work. Got my bobcat mounted there a few years back also. Top notch work and awesome people to give your business to. I also have a deer and elk hide there now.

:yeah: He was working on a big cougar last time I was in and we have a nice cougar in our living room he did for us.  He does a great job on the eyes, they look so real.

 :yeah:

Also whatever you do I would do an open mouth.  I have seen very few closed mouth bobcat mounts that look good.

By pelting do you mean a rug? or just a skin to hang from the nose on a hook? Make sure to tube it so if you ever find your self sleepin single in a double again................... live mount on.And I also agree that 90% of cats get murdered because of their face.My buddy has 3 live mount cougars,he had them all done by a taxi down near olympia and whoever that was is a cat scientist, they are KILLER!

If we are thinking the same big kitty, I think it's done now.  It was right in the center of the shop 10 days ago.  Full body mount on a ped?

Well just an update:

I called the WDFW today and the officer is going to swing by and tag the hide tomorrow morning and right after that I am heading over to that Peter's Taxidermy to get it tanned. Hoping it turns out well!

I told my mother this week about downing a Bobcat and my dad got on the phone really pumped about it and talked for a half hour+ about how I should mount it and all the tips and tricks of doing it. He used to do museum quality mounts over in the Yakima area long before I was born and got out of hunting before I ever even started shooting... let alone hunting. Since he and I do not do much together I am thinking maybe a man weekend would be a good idea to mount this cat and catch up with him.

We shall see! Thanks again folks for all the help!

I actually saw another bobcat yesterday. Unfortunately it was in the road about 80 yards from our turn off to our hunting area and ran onto private ground. It looked really small though. Good choice on taxidermy you will like it

Alright its off and running at Peter's, both the taxidermist and game warden said I did a pretty good job skinning for a first timer  :) Said 4 to 6 months to get back from the tanner, time to sit back and enjoy the wait! Getting good at that considering I have a Colt SAA on order.... should be here in the next year or two lol

PS Peter's taxidermy has a really awesome looking display room, good lord! Definitely appears to do great work, all of the mounts looked amazing.
