Two more weekends of deer for me first, then I am ready and willing!  Though I do still have a westside archery elk tag to fill, but really want to get after the dogs this year!

I have a hunt booked with TLBradford in a month or two but have way too much hunting left to do before I can even think about that.

I see what your looking at but it was a frontal chest shot on this big ole dude. I howled him in and had my scope at 14X. He was about 50 yards away and I could see his eyes looking around. It was an AWESOME hunt. I love howling in those big old males. I think it was my first kill with the AR.

I've been out calling a little but have turned my attention back to deer.  I'll be hitting it again come December.

20"-1/12twist.  It works very well with 40gr.to 52gr not as good with heavier.

Im shooting 60gr out of a 1-12 and it shoots very tight groups, but it is a 26 in barrel, bolt gun. do you think a longer barrel on an ar platform like the 24in 1-12twist varmit would shoot 60gr well?
Title: Re: Who's Ready

Man you have a slow twist in an ar, Mines 1/9 :o did you order a special twist barrel?
Title: Re: Who's Ready
Post by: Gutpile on November 06, 2008, 11:18:11 AM
I have a 1:10. I like shooting lighter bullets as well. It's pretty finicky though. I've got a good load with the old barnes varminators but they're discontinued. I'm gonna see how the Varmint grenades group when they're gone hopefully they'll group just as well.

I think you would be better off with a 1/10 myself maybe a 1/9. The 1/9 would allow you to go to a bit heavier bullet and not lose too much too.

I have just found I get tighter groups using the lighter bullets with the 1/12 :dunno:
Title: Re: Who's Ready
Post by: demontang on November 06, 2008, 12:02:36 PM
With some cheap 45gr remeington's I was shooting I could get a .5" group and with the 40gr hornady's its a clover.  I was shooting of just a front rest, with a 5-6lb trigger when I did my groups so the groups could get tighter with a good rest and better trigger.

Had I known this was goint to turn into a AR post I would have posted mine earlier.

I put this rifle together myself.

Stag arms lower, with a kit from Del-ton. Exchanged the M-4 forearm for a DMPS free float rifle tube and a YHM low profile gas port.

No kidding. I have been  at Olympic Arms' website. What are the pros/cons to a carbine vs something like their ultramatch?
Title: Re: Who's Ready
Post by: demontang on November 06, 2008, 05:41:25 PM
The ultra match cant shoot 5.56 where as my k16 can, a .223 chambered gun shouldnt shoot 5.56 because of a slight difference in case lenght and a higher pressure rating which could get ugly :bdid:. If you plan on just shooting .223 then get an ultra match, OLY makes some of the best barrels in the AR biz. Get a hold of Mike at Dtech he can make you one hell of an AR and he manly uses OLY for his base.

Mikes a cool guy. He built my AR. I love it, I only wish I would have made mine lighter and got it in .204.
Title: Re: Who's Ready
Post by: Big10gauge on November 06, 2008, 06:22:39 PM
If you're going to build a ar and want a chamber that will shoot both types of .223 get it chambered for .223 wylde. It started out as a match chambering. Might want to investigate it. RRA barrels come with that chambering also.
Title: Re: Who's Ready
Post by: demontang on November 06, 2008, 06:49:47 PM
This is what some wrote as the answer to the rra chambered in it.

"I can think of no reason to use the Bill Wylde chamber unless you are single loading 80-90gr VLD bullets for long range competition. That is what it was designed for and it works well for that. It certainly is not a chamber to choose if you are loading the magazine. Rounds loaded for the Wylde chamber will not begin to fit in the magazine."

It is still an accurate gun with .223/5.56, but it is a little longer chamber then a 5.56 or .223.
Title: Re: Who's Ready
Post by: Big10gauge on November 06, 2008, 06:59:07 PM
Don't know why .223 or 5.56 round won't load from the mag. My ar's are chambered for the wylde and load fine and will shoot sub .5 moa. Maybe that's one persons's opinion that is only talking about BR shooting. Don't know why he would make that type of statement for having a wylde chamber. Here's an opinion from Sniper Central.
"The .223 has a tighter chamber around the neck and is shorter which allows for a bit better accuracy. You can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56 chamber, but it is DANGEROUS to shoot 5.56 (surplus for instance) ammo in a .223 chamber. BE CAREFUL. What the Wylde chamber does is allow for 5.56 ammo with slightly tighter chamber for better accuracy. So you can shoot both 5.56 and 223 safely with good accuracy."
Title: Re: Who's Ready
Post by: demontang on November 06, 2008, 07:22:47 PM
He was saying that the wylde chamber was made for bench rest Ar's that shot hand loads with the 80-90gr bullets that have a  COA to long for an AR mags.

Here is a great article on the .223/5.56 chamber

Demontang, I see what you mean but COL is dependent on bullet depth seating. I imagine that most BR shooters set their bullets into the lands and somewhat further. I can shoot 90 gr bullets out of my wylde ars magazines fine. I was definitely jumping the bullet into the lands by doing so and I've only loaded some up once just for grins, the loads are definitely compressed. Anyway I don't shoot BR so I don't have any use of shooting that heavy of a bullet out of my ars. I'll move up to the 25-06 when I need that weight. :chuckle:

Gutpile, your right, I'm not much of a Gamer. Although my son and I did beat Halo 2.

If on a budget you can put togehter a kit rifle for around $700. Not likely to be as accurate as a  complete rifle from Bushmaster or RRA, ect.

Eventually I will get around to putting a Gov't profile 20" on my rifle.

I got my k16 for $720 after tax. I know there are deals on other brands out there to if you look around.
