Well it was a two day blast over east. we saw a bunch of bucks and one real nice buck today that posted up on private land just out of reach for my buddy. we had a interesting time when we found an outfitter was hunting our land and had it baited up . shirt tail permission which is completely against our purchase agreements . they wont be around next year . lets just say it's an outfitter that takes a guy with the initals JB hunting .
-
Were you guys hunting up Epsom salts road on that newly leased land? Coach
-
no south of that up pine creek . the guide was cool he just had bad info from his boss i'd say . He had a client with him and he was a nice guy . the dush is the guy who supposedly gave out permission . we have a strict covinance that allows no business operations in the property. I hope the one buck makes it till next season he should be real nice . I will have a good game plan set up next year for sure . I really got lucky to sneak up on the buck I got so dam crunchy
-
Ya there's always nice bucks up pine creek good area I've been on Aeneas and a couple othe little areas I know seem some really good bucks just never a good shot oppurtunity but that's huntin

-
another 215 buck

I know where I'm hunting next year

Theres more people in that unit this yr than I have ever seen.
With no snow, every yahoo was out in full force driving every road.
The deer numbers were very low as well. I would assume mostly do to the snow conditions.
We encountered more dudes talking about their first yr up there than anything.
When we hit the loomis store we must have heard the following phrases 100 times. "Just driving around to get the lay of the land", or "usually hunt swakane, but wanted to give this one a try", then the normal..... "need more beer :chuckle:"
Just be prepared. :twocents:

Could some of it be do to the other units not opening until tomorrow.
-
Polar SEA nice buck. :chuckle: :chuckle: saw him take it down.
On a Side note, There was more people hunting late season archery 215, than Methow valley during modern firearm. Saw 12 guys in 500 sqaure yds one morning. All 3 mornings I saw more people then I saw deer. like 5-20 people every morning
So frustrating.

It's only as frustrating as you make it. ;)

I agree there is way to many hunters all units should be draw and just give out more tags 10 times more hunters then there is deer out there

I rather see them open up more units. If it's open for rifle, it should be open for Muzzy and archery. Whats the point of choosing a weapon to spread us out if they turn around and limit us to only a few units?
Also, would REALLY like to know how many of those HUNDREDS of hunters in the unit were there becasue they had a Multi-season tag in their pocket and didn't score rifle hunting.
Oh, by the way, if you go, practice out out to 90 so that 80 yard shot is a drop in the bucket for you. :bash: :bash:
By day two, almost every buck on the hill had been hit somewhere on it's body.
It ain't what it used to be.
-
I wont shoot passed 40 yards theres guys that shoot out to a hundred no thank you. i feel every unit should be open but select numbers and you are right alot of them have multi season and probably never shot a bow i have bow hunted for ten years.

Here's something caught my eye while up there this weekend :)

Practice shooting your bow on a regular basis to be comfortable with shooting distances. This topic is a ongoing argument. I practice at 50, 60, 70 and 80. I would take an 80 yard shot if conditions were right.
Thx TylerMulie, coachcw and bowhunterforever

I agree , just like some guys shooting there rifles 500 yards , I shot my buck at 67 yards no wind , plenty of time for all the form checks and bubblinging up , set my sight and held pin in the spot . he went thirty yards and bedded for good . the one big thing is angle and wind that can really shorten up ones effective range .
-
My brother and I were talking about giving out tags. They should Give a certain amount of tags per year for every late archery mulie tag. Making it so people get drawn around every 3 years ish, I feel like this would strengthen the heard and create bigger bucks with better odds of harvesting one!
-
Way more peeps in 215 this year, was a zoo....Im going to put a snack shack on the main rd next year... :chuckle:

I don't question anyones ability to shoot a small target at long distance. But, it's quite obvious to anyone that sees all the deer running around with arrows or wounds on the body outside the lung area that either A, people overestimate their ability B. Are desperate to but an arrow in something or C. the animal moved on the shot.
And even for the best 'C' can not be controlled.
That's all I'm sayin' .
-
The answer to the question above is......D, all of the above!
Its happens way too much in 215...lots of wounded critters running around....
-
We didn't see anyone up totes coulee. :o

That is because the terrain is steep and hunting is work up there :chuckle: :chuckle:. Hunting is much better on the flatter ground where you can drive around until you see one to stalk. This is all too bad :bash: I have never hunted there but I have watched deer there for almost 30 years, everytime I am over there I have to make the drive from Loomis to South Pine creek.

There isn't a single unit open for general late rifle mule deer :dunno: Feel lucky you get one, I bet it won't always be that way.

The pressure in 215 is mainly because people r lazy and won't scout or hike. There's always shooters on rattlesnake and Washburn. But there's also 50 guys in those spots everyday it's open because it's easy access.
I will continue shooting animals at long range until I miss or wound without finding.
73 yards is my farthest kill. But won't hesitate at 80 because of practice
Chiwawa here I come!!!!!!

There was definitely a lot of hunters up there. My buddy and I covered a lot of ground and burned up some boot leather. We put the stalk on a couple of dandys but it didn't work out. I shot at a 2x3 but my peep had twisted when I drew back so I couldn't see thru it. :bash: We had fun but with the lack of snow it made it tough. Some guys had connected on a few so congrats to them! I missed last year so it was good to get up high in our honey hole and hunt with a great friend. There is always next year!

Believe me when I say I do feel lucky to have it! THAT is why I have to comment on the situation. The late season and archery in general may one day be in trouble because of some of what we are talking about in this thread.
-
Just got back from there and yes the hunter numbers is definitly up. we could not get any of our usual camp spots. We got a few shots but nothing big and no blood. On a side note someone poached a 2x2 and left it. ALIVE!!!!!!. so i guess the warden was called. Hopefully not someone on this forum.............
-
I don't think the deer numbers were down this year. I think the weather was about the same as it was last year and 2008. Lots of bucks hit the dirt in 08 and I saw plenty that were taken the first couple of days of this year. I must of seen close to 100 deer on the opener. About 15 were bucks and more than half those were legal. There were ALOT of hunters this year though. As the season went on I saw less and less deer but that's to be expected because of pressure. I tagged out on the 25th and my brother tagged out on Thanksgiving. One thing I am wondering about is the UTV,s and quads on the dirt roads and riding around off road.
-
There are some designated roads in that area that allow ATV/UTV use. I don't know which ones, but, there are maps available from what I have read. I think Conconnully's website had something on it. :dunno:
-
No Bark I think I met you up there a few years ago. Your son had just tagged out on a nice heavy deer off one of the skid roads off Chopaka grade. How did you do this year?
