Once you go to different calibers, the price goes up, even loading your own.
There isn't an animal on the planet that will stand up to a .300 mag.
So after that it's about making noise.

And by the way there's nothing wrong with Savages, awesome guns, awesome triggers.
Had a few problems with the blind box mags, but that's an easy fix.

Have played with the magnum 338's for many years now, from the Win mag to the 340 weatherby, 338-378, the Lapua, an last the Edge since it first became popular. Since then, many have begun to shoot that round , including many on HuntWa, and sing its praise,and is a most sought after chambering in custom long range rifle builds. The Sierra and the OTM in 300 grains have a coefficient that is hard to beat . The Savage in Lapua is a great choice for someone wanting to stretch it out without breaking the bank on a full custom. Go for it!

only downside I have seen is the cost of brass. 2.50-3 bucks each.
I am assuming you are reloading. If not then loaded ammo is unreasonably priced at 5-7 bucks each. I can load for about 1 $ each (not counting brass)

I'd do a search on snipershide. More than a few guys on there were disappointed.

I almost went with a .338 RUM when I had BenchMark build my .338 Edge. I did contemplate doing a .338 Norma Magnum for a bit. The .338 RUM would be straight forward reloading and a big game animal isn't going to be able to tell which it was shot with when it drops in its shadow. I was going to have Benchmark build me a 7-300 Winchester but I have been really looking at the 7mm Dakota. The 285 Hornady match flat shoot in my Edge and "HAMMER" animals. Sometimes the Berger 300gr Hybrids are hard to find unless you keep your supply up. I shoot allot more of the 285's than I do the 300's both are as accurate as it gets. I have yet to use a 300gr Hybrid on anything larger than a RockChuck.
A 285gr Hornady Match recovered from a Mule deer I shot at just shy of 400yards. Acted like a varmint bullet on the inside, multiple exits. I found the base just under the hide on the off side. Just the way I like it. It flat crushed him! The impact was loud on the quiet morning, sounded like smacking Roseanne Bar on the hindend with a canoe paddle.

I don't hear much about this round, but does anyone shoot a 6.5 x 47 lapua?I pieced one together for a friend and it's been great so far. 26" McGowen barrel on a Savage action. It shoots the 130gr Bergers in the .25 MOA range and has shown a lot of potential with the 142 SMK.

savages are a great gun and out of the box one of the best rite now. I think if you were to get the lrh lapua and put a different stock on it and I think you will have a great rifle for long range, shoot up that barrel and have a new barrel put on in what ever cartridge you would like at that time.

Benchmark built up my 270 for me. I still cant believe the ability of this rifle....it's stupifying!!!
