I was just curious as to what others are driving in regards to all wheel drive cars? I used to have a 2007 Subaru Outback, but at a 119k miles I blew the head gasket, leaking valve cover and shot front struts. I sold it, but really looking at going back to all-wheel drive. Considering another outback or Audi. Any suggestions? I usually drive about 28-34k miles per year.
-
Acura MDX, good mileage, excellent dependability, low maintenance and comfortable. :twocents:
-
That's a hard one, I think our choice of available awd cars is a joke. Other countries have far more options than we do. To bad having one shipped costs so much. Maybe a Canadian awd? They have a bunch of those little awd diesel powered vans, I hear they are all the rage in Canada.
-
An Outback is very practical for an outdoorsman. They have almost 9" of ground clearance, can hold a ton of gear, and their AWD system is the gold standard.
-
Let me know if you buy an Audi, I will mail you my card and reserve you a spot in my parking lot. You will need it. :bash:
-
Wanting to tag along on this thread. Our last two cars have been Toyota Sienna AWD minivans. Our current one has 140k on it and since the kids are both in college now we are looking to down size. I will tell you one thing, we have loved our Toyotas and they snow like mad in the winter time. Excellent handling on compact snow and in powder, well balanced.
-
We have two Hondas one is a Pilot and the one I drive is the Older style CRV both all wheel drive. Great vehicles and the CRV is like a jeep in the winter time!
-
I would get a whoopi doo subaru outback if I had the money...put some rainbow stickers on it and obama stickers on it so it would be safe at trail heads...NOT,LOL everyone I know who has or have owned a subaru loved them

+1 Next new family car will likely be another Subaru Forester; great ground clearance, ample and accessible cargo area, decent mileage, and sure-footed in snow and ice. The current one has 140K on it with a head gasket change at approximately 100K.

DO NOT BUY AN AUDI, unless you have a ton of disposable income. You can't even buy wipers anywhere but the stealership. VERY expensive to repair.
Trust me on this, my wife has an 04 A4, and we just dropped 6 grand into it last year with only 110,000 on it.
But if you do want an Audi Ill make you a hellava deal on one.

I've had a couple of subarus and an Audi. The Audi was by far my favorite. Parts are expensive but I never had an issue with mine, the 1.8T had plenty of power, amazing gas mileage and the car just drove like a dream. I went from the Audi (it was stolen and used in an armed robbery of a tribal gas station) to two Subarus back to back, never was happy with them compared to the Audi. :twocents:
-
Outback all the way!!! Mine has never left me stranded through mud, snow, or any logging road! Plus how many people can do this with their Audi?
-
Just for the record that is an Elk not a person :chuckle:
-
Another vote for the outback! I wasn't much of a Subaru fan until I met my wife, who's vehicle at the time was an 01 outback. I'd never driven one, or been in one. But I grew to love that car. It was a riot to drive in the snow, and it was comfortable and had lots of space. This last year I bought her a new one. Got a 2012 outback, and its our daily driver. Gets great gas mileage, got 27 mpg going from Everett to Ellensburg doin 80 all the way. Very spacious, however, with the newer models, they gave more rear passenger legroom with a smaller cargo area. But its still ok. A roof rack fixes that. My brother in law who is about 350 sits comfortably in the back.

An excellent suggestion IMO

Volvo V70R (not to be confused with a XC or T5)
Fun to drive, but repairs can be pretty costly.

I had an Outback for a while and it was a great car. I got about 22-24 mpg and it had plenty of room for my decoys and hunting gear. I ended up selling it to my folks because they liked it so much and buying a truck because myself, along with my buddies are all taller and it wasn't the most roomie on longer trips. I have had a lot of experience with an MDX and RDX as well but I think they are a little too "luxury" if you are looking for a rig to bring into the hills. The RDX is the smaller version and doesn't have much cargo space either.
-
I was reading up on outbacks, some folks are sticking forester struts under them to raise them up a couple inches more.
I'm looking at possibly a legacy or impreza
-
I have a mdx and it's went 60k without a hitch ! the Toyota rav4 is a decent lil buggy to if you want a tad smaller .
-
4th generation 4-Runner with the V8 is all time 4wd. My wife drives a 2006. awesome car.

I owned a 2008 Toyota Highlander that was AWD. Great in any condition. I remember I had to force it slide it in the snow. We would still have it, but traded it in on a 2011 Sienna FWD to upsize for the kids.

I'm looking hard at the 2014 forester
I really hate the whole stigma associated with Subaru :puke:
but for my commute over dirt road, 50mph blacktop, and very little snowplow action it fits the bill and should give me good mpg.
It won't see 70 mph I-90 speeds but on a rare occasions.
-
Our daughters all wheel drive Rav 4, went 140k miles and never had any repairs needed.
I would love the 4x4 version not the all wheel drive, so I could tow our boat if needed. Would not recommend towing with AWD.
-
I really hate the whole stigma associated with Subaru :puke:
me too. But in terms of reliability, performance, mileage and resale, it's hard to deny that it's the perfect NW car. Plus, if you ever have to go to the city, it's nice that you can actually park it somewhere.
/I once got a lifted H2 stuck in a Downtown Seattle parking garage.
//The locals were not thrilled.
-
My folks just bought a forester with a manual transmission as a DD and tow rig for their mini whinni. So far they love it.

I gotta agree and there is a bunch of them around here, mostly driven by old hippies. I'll have to tint the windows :chuckle:
I don't sticker my rigs, but I might have to put some hunting stickers on this one
-
love my little toyota rav awd (2000) 4cyl, dont get much respect in it, but I have 231k miles on her and she still gets me from A-B, no repairs yet ( i bought it with135k) sounds like the water pump is going out

BMW 328Xi. Comfortable, good on gas, and fun to drive. Don't let all the German car reliability stereotypes scare you. BMW's are easy to work on and parts can be had for cheap if you look around.

Thanks. I'm looking for something to replace my Bronco II. Not right now but possibly next summer. I've been eyeing the Honda CRV's and the Toyota Rav 4. Or, possibly a Subaru. But I want the best mpg possible and I'm not sure the Subaru provides that.

Don't really look at what I get for mileage, I drive about 60 miles a day, and figure I get around 25mpg :dunno: great little car, automatic, If I have to go anywhere they are easy to park, my wife, daughter and I fit in it good bet I am 6,4", 220lbs so no one sits behind me..
-
I need/want to break into the 30mpg range @ 55mph with easy driving.
80mph on the freeway is not a factor for me.
-
In the snow and ice over here, my wifes Rav 4 handles better than my Tacoma or F-350........ The Rav is so sticky with its studded snows, that it amazes me. Subarus are too low and small for me........no head or leg room compared to the Rav.

Because the tabs are overdue? :chuckle:

We owned a 2009 Tribeca, did awesome in the snow, my wife started traveling further for work and the gas mileage was getting her so we sold it a couple weeks ago and bought a Crosstrek. Its only got 500 miles on it, but so far its averaging 29 mpg with a mix of hilly terrain and a couple trips to Vancouver from Castle Rock. Slapped some Hakkappellitta 7's on it (same tire we had for the Tribeca), and expect it to excell in the snow and ice as well.
-
We have an 07 ford freestyle. It was followed by the tauras X in 08. Enjoy ours.

I can only speak for BMW's, but my 330i is just as easy to work on as my Chevy pickup. If you can't turn a wrench the dealers will gouge the heck out of you, but if your not mechanically challenged they are great cars to own. :twocents:
-
Subaru all the way. My buddy has an Outback with 310K on it and he has only done normal maintenance on it. My wife has a forester and it has 170K trouble free miles and she beats the *censored* out of it.
-
I bought a audi allroad for my wife this car is pretty amazing all-around it has air ride height adjustment for deep snow or off road awsome gas milage.
-
It's gonna be hard to beat one of the subie models for what you're looking for.
I have a Volvo XC70 - way more fun to drive and better ride in my opinion than the same generation Subie but premium gas and a bit lower MPG would probably be a deal killer if I had a long commute. Not to mention the maintenance gets out of control pretty quick with the euro cars. I do all of my work myself other than major jobs. You save a ton of money buying your own parts online. It's like $100 for a "service" at the Vo dealer that's basically just an oil change and inspecting a few things...
I also wouldn't be happy with the XC as our only AWD - my Dodge Ram Cummins does most of the off-road miles for hunting season, although I'll often take the Volvo to a wilderness trailhead to "fit in" a bit better.
I drove by a trailhead a few years back during high buck with 2 pickups with apparently slashed tires. All of the Subies and Honda Civic type rigs seemed to be fine... wasn't too hard to figure that one out!
-
My kids and friends all drive Subaru's and I drive a Volvo S60 AWD. I have never had any issues with my Volvo but the Subaru's are a bit more rugged and seem to do much better offroad but the Volvo is a really nice ride!
-
Chevy equinox
From the sounds of this thread it's a commuter car. Great gas milage, roomie and drives nice.
-
Another +1 for the Subaru. Best AWD system I have driven (with Audi being up there too). Unless ground clearance is an issue I actually prefer driving my outback in the snow over my Tacoma 4x4 - probably has something to do with weight distribution in my often empty truck.
-
One of my Battalion Chiefs is as redneck as they come, and a brilliant firemen. He often states how well his wife's Subaru cars over the years have lasted way longer than he would expect them to. Sounds like oil changes are easy to do, and the AWD is flawless. I would forget about the hippy crap and get a Subaru.

The RAV4s are nice, and you cannot go wrong with a Toyota, for the most part, regarding dependability. It seems, subjectively, that you might lose cargo area with the RAV4, but I have not seen direct comparisons.
The other plus for the Forester is that it is consistently ranked as one of the safest in crash tests, at least during the time that we were in the market, if that is a consideration.

Only in Washington would a conversation about hunting trucks digress into a Subaru fangasm!
The topic is All-Wheel Drive Car
Nobody mentioned trucks.

From that fueleconomy.gov site, these seem like 4 of cars in the same class:
Comparison (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=33973&id=33404&id=33411&id=34234)
Out of those 4, I think the forester would be the best.
