Title: remington sps varmint or tactical?
Post by: buglebuster on December 03, 2013, 06:14:06 AM
In the market for a new coyote rifle in 223 and have settled on the remington sps tactical and sps varmint. I love both but wondering which would be the best bet, or if they are basically the same. I like the tactical a little more but am worried about the 20in barrel for those longer shots. Any input or first hand experience would be great  thanks!

I have the tactical with the 20 inch bull barrel and a Hogue rubber stock. Don't worry about long distance shots. You could shoot it comfortably to 400 yards.

A 20" barrel for varmint is a prime length. Great for calling situation and in and out of the truck real quick. As for wanting more velocity/ accuracy from a longer barrel. For your application, it isn't going to matter. The 20" will do what your looking to do.

That is exactly what I was hoping to hear  my next question is why they dont call the tactical the varmint, and the varmint the tactical lol :dunno:

The SPS Tactical will be way more versatile,  both in it's compact size and the fact it has a 9 twist barrel, allowing higher BC bullets, thus extending your range.
You will be able to run 69 grain, and in some, up to 77 grain bullets.
I've had 9 twist 18" barreled AR-15's that shoot the 77 MK's into 5/8" @ 100 easy and stay sub MOA to 600 yards.

If strictly a  coyote gun I would get a standard barrel SPS with a 24" barrel. Why lug the extra weight around going between stands. You will not be taking that many shot at coyotes to heat up the barrel. I have the SPS Varmint with the 26" barrel and I use it for Target and ground squirrel shooting. I will only take it coyote hunting if planning on staying in one spot and not traveling between coyote stands. :twocents:

I have the Varmit in 22-250.  very accurate but I am waiting for my Jewel Trigger replacement.  I have the stock trigger on my VTR and it is very smooth.  The 22-250 is a little heavy and I not my groups are not the best.  Over all I really like.  It is heavy but I don't care.  The Blackhawk Axiom stock floats the barrel and love the pistol grip.  I can let my son shoot it comfortably with the adjustable stock.

I have a howa axiom right now and its a tank, 15lbs total. The remington is a lighter gun and with the 20in barrel should be quite a bit lighter.

I have a .308 Tactical and if I were using it as a varmint gun I don't think I would have choose the Tactical, it's just too heavy.

I believe the current SPS varmint is 8.5lbs and the SPS Tactical is 7.5LBS. There may be other models but those are the weights listed for the standard SPS Varmint and Tactical.

I have a Remington 700 VTR in 22-250 with a Coyote Special 4-14 scope on it.  (The one with the green stock and triangular barrel.)  Nice gun, but since I got my 20 Grendel, I never use it, so it's on consignment at a local gun shop.  I'd keep it, but at my age, I just have too much stuff!  :chuckle:
