Daniel Beavers, 49, harvested his second-ever black bear on the second day of Pennsylvania’s bear season. According to The Scranton Times-Tribune, the Pennsylvania Game Commission recorded the bear to weigh 772 pounds, making it the largest taken in the state this season. Beavers last bagged a black bear in 2007, but he told reporters that he had been following this bruin for nearly five years.
“I finally caught up with him in hunting season,” Beavers said.
The bear had evaded the hunter in past years but Beaver recognized it by a white “V” mark on its chest, a trait that is common among Asiatic bears but unusual in American black bears. Beavers found the bear only an hour into the hunt and downed the animal with two shots from his father’s .30-06 rifle. His father recently passed away and Beavers intends on commemorating the hunt as a tribute to the man who taught him how to hunt.
“I don’t know why I decided to take his gun,” Beavers said. “I guess I was thinking about him.”
The hunter said he will be submitting the bear’s skull to the Boone and Crockett Club to determine whether the skull is record-sized after the mandatory 60-day drying period.
WNEP reported that bear hunters have kept check stations busy.
“I think we’ll do well. With the bear season running through the deer season, I think hunters will have ample opportunity to harvest a Pennsylvania black bear,” Game Commission conservation officer Ryan Gidea said.
As for Beavers, he says this bear is the trophy of a lifetime.
“I couldn’t believe how big it was. It’s big,” he said.

Whoa. That thing is huge. What about PA grows bears so big? :dunno:
One of the things I like almost as much as reading the story, is reading the comments. There is almost always some PETA loudmouth on the board getting into arguments with everybody... this one has a gal named "Rebecca". Rebecca's response to a hunter's comment that people like Rebecca should just STFU and leave hunters alone since we have our preferences, she has hers, and we're not busting her balls over her preferences:
"Eating other animals stops being a personal preference when you take away the rights of anotherso you can have a snack or a decoration. A preference doesn’t hurt anyone. Your preference kills someone. No animals are not things. Animals are someones. To kill them for your own pleasure is speciesist. My preference may be to be rich. But I don’t go around robbing other people to serve my preference. Same concept. I would not care if what anyone did if no one else got hurt. Eating animals also destroys the environment and uses 1000s of times the water and grain to produce one lb of food. Therefore, when you eat meat you are destroying the environment we all share and contributing to world hunger. Don’t believe me? Look up what the United Nations has to say on this topic. Bottom line. Eat meat and screw a whole lot of people and animals. Meat = greed = murder."
LOL, we all are speciesists since we discrimate against other species! :cryriver:

I know Pman, crazy isn't it. What are they feeding the bears back east to make them so big? We never get anything out here anywhere near that big. Must be the corn and soy beans.
-
Every year they get a couple over 500 lbs ...The way they hunt bears in PA just makes me laugh ...including all my uncles and brothers and their friends ...The put drives on threw the mountain laurel and post guys out front and when the bear comes out all hell breaks loose ... :dunno: :chuckle: Being in PA is second to none when opening morning of deer season starts ...The different sounds of different calibers rings threw the woods like no other place in the world ....little off topic but its the same with bear if your in the right spot !

NJ has had a moratorium on hunting black bears in most of the state for a long time. They're so overpopulated that they finally have opened hunting and in some cases are allowing hunting within city limits with certain weapons. These bears have been living on garbage and bird seed for a long time and not been chased. It's a lot different that hunting them out here.
