Title: youth bow ?
Post by: teanawayslayer on December 05, 2013, 08:13:17 AM: I am wanting to purchase a new bow for my son who is 7. My son is left handed and not sure if I should buy him a left handed bow or not. He has a cheap 40.00 bow now. I was looking at the diamond infinite edge. Reason being is it is adjustable from 5-70lbs. That way when he is old enough to hunt with it in the future. I am not an archer and have only shot a bow a few times. I guess I'm not sure to buy him a left hand or a right hand. It's hard for a 7 year old to know what he wants. But seeing that the bow would be 350 bucks I want to make sure it is right. Any other parents faced this?

I would be more concerned first about his eye dominance, if he's right eye dominant a right handed bow would be the way to go. At such a young age it will be easier for him to adapt to a right handed bow. If he's left eye dominant I would go with a leftie.

I have 3 kids, 11, 7, and 4, all have been carrying a bow since they were old enough to walk with me, shooting at whatever safe target they want (parent approved)
3D events are a family affair, really helps when there are other kids doing the same thing.
I am a traditional archer and have a couple fiberglass kids bows they started with, then an 11# longbow, an 18# longbow, a 20# recurve, a 30# recurve, and a couple 40#'s
best way (in my opinion) is to consider eye dominance, it is easier to teach them how to shoot accurately (more fun) when it is natural to see the target, point and release..
Your child will have more fun if they hit what they want.
practice makes it a habit, and familiarity will make it comfortable, so right/left hand is not that important when starting out. comfort comes from repetition and practice.

It does not matter how much you pay for the equipment, the largest investment (and payoff) is the good times and memories you have while shooting together.
another bow consideration is, what kind do you have ? as your child's desire is to imitate you.

I started my kids off with the bear apprentice 2 . awesome for my kids. I might be willing to sell a lh model . depends on if my son wants to sell it. he has a bigger one coming.

:yeah: x2. This is Braxton's bow. He's had it for almost two years and is still growing into it.

Bought that one for my son. Great little bow and it comes in left handed as well.

I agree. Even as an old fart I found adapting to a left-hand bow very quick and easy, and it made a world of difference in my shooting success.
