Title: Who's hunting elk in the Watt in December?
Post by: cwbobcathunter on December 07, 2013, 01:08:47 PM
So I've been spending some time driving roads, primarily up the Hutchison road and Watt canyon. Everytime I go up, I run into native american's hunting, and cleaning deer &elk, along with countless gut piles from elk and deer which they have been killing. Which tribe has hunting rights here? I didn't know they could hunt up there  :dunno:  I'm not trying to make anybody mad, I just want to know who/what tribe has the rights to be hunting up there.

The Yakamas. And I believe the Muckelshoots have been hunting over there but whether they actually have the right to do so is up for debate.

It's called poaching with immunity.
Not hunting.

Not trying to get anybody mad :dunno: :bash: Good luck with that! I've been trying to forget about all the countless elk hides and gut pile I saw along near there last December, absolutely sickening. No wonder there is so much other poaching happening when this sort of un fairness is going on :twocents:

Exactly. All this b.s. is heresay unless there is pictures or proof of it.  Native Americans have every right to be hunting.

Why do we need proof? We know it's happening. And we know they have the right to do it, even if we know it's wrong.

I don't have any native friends so I don't need to kiss any azz, it's a hot topic, always will be!  Just because its their right doesn't make it right!  It's wrong and always will be.

I know some guys on here are bitter and love to spread and create drama we all know who they are.I believe the area is open til the 15th like the other designated feeding areas?  Either way you dodon't hear me complaining about the other legal hunters hunting in legal areas do you????  Maybe we should do as some suggest on here and close all hunting after modern?  Oh nope camt do that because that wouldn't be fair......I don't always agree with some of our tribal members methods or style of "hunting" but as long as their doing it legal I'm not going to fret about it.

Now mucks or any other tribe attempting in this area is another story...........

It's been going on way before some of you youngsters were born and even me. I notice that the, " whites " still have good hunting. The crappy hunting for the " white man " in this state is because of the liberal, anti hunting WDFW. Plain and simple.

Now ain't that some truth....  Spoke to a DFW Officer coming out of the Watt gate Thursday afternoon and he said it was open until the 15th.

I agree with Whiteeyes, and Coach is right about locking, but I thought the gates were locked.    I'm impressed however of the native response on this thread since about 500 per day get posted.   You guys picked up on this one pretty quick :chuckle:

Look at Obama changing laws illegally for his own personal agendas and people don't like it one bit.....

:dunno:  I comment quite often and waited for a bit to comment here.  You know what, NEVER, there I said it.  Now its time to wait and see...............I was up this weekend trying to find these killing grounds and I didn't see anything.  Maybe it was just timing as it was the weekend and they had other things to do........watt was quiet and I only seen 2 other trucks and they weren't tribal. I drove over to the wenas and the gates were closed and no gut piles anywhere. Bethel, I seen 2 possible trucks that were tribal and nothing in the back and no git piles or drag marks.  Bald mt nothing............I guess they were all in the nile as I didn't make it over that way...........

Every time I see this come up, it makes me think.....   and ever time, I come to the same conclusion.

The folks doing that hunting had ancestors who struck a deal.....   A deal that many at the time would have considered a really crappy deal.   Now, at least in this aspect, it's turned out pretty well for them.

As I compare this to my own life, I've bought some 4-plexes a long time ago at dirt cheap prices and that has turned out well for me.   I hope to pass that along to my kids and they will benefit from agreements I made many years prior.   So, my kids will be "advantaged" compared to others.

I think the comparison stands.   Their ancestors struck a deal.    The DuPonts, or Ted Turner's family, or Bill Gate's kids all had ancestors that struck deals that landed them in nice spots.

Should those all be neutralized at some point?

If not, what makes this different?

On a related note, I wandered (barely) onto private land in Montana last month while deer hunting and met a land owner.  Fortunately, he was friendly as he told me I was on his land.   But he inherited over 120,000 acres in Montana and he gets to hunt it and i don't.   Is that any more fair than tribal hunting?   (And yes, as I spoke to him and he described his 120,000 acres I was very jealous).

P.S.  This comes from a non-native who 'd like the same hunting opportunities as everyone else.

That example is perfectly fair, since he owns the land.  Nobody would worry about the tribes pounding herds in critical winter habitat on their own reservations. . . It's when they do it off the reservation and during times of the year and with weapon types that any non-tribal member would be crucified for that drives people up a wall.

The landowner in Montana is also bound by hunting laws set by Montana FWP, whereas the tribes get to come up with their own rules for off reservation land.

The two don't really compare IMO.

Not sure if any of you remember, but about 15 yrs ago the west side tribes were killing deer in the Methow valley after all seasons had closed.   the locals (several hundred) got organized and met with the tribes over several meetings with wdfw in attendance to keep records.  the tribes stopped their winter hunting with some agreements.   I think Jeff thayer from wdfw was one of the people involved and also Pat Heenan (now retired).  I'm posative Pat would be glad to let you know how this was done.  He's proud of this agreement worked out.
