was to hunt the st. john area with muzzy for whities but it is just too cold. -2 degrees will a muzzleloader work in these temps? I was also worried about the safety issue with the cold temps. am not a *censored* but why chance it when there is always a next year. mike w

Cold won't affect it at all. It's dry, that's a good thing. You shouldn't have any problems with your gun going off when it's supposed to. Now if it's just too cold for YOU, that's a different matter. I don't blame you if you decide to stay home. I think it's supposed to warm up slightly sometime next week.

Gun will still shoot, just a little slower and a little more drop.

We had 10 degrees this AM was a bit nippy this morning but that's where the deer are. Be back in 407 in the morning just looking for a doe for meat in the freezer but definitely won't pass up a buck.

We Had No Problem With Our Muzzys Going Off In The Cold In 8 To 14 Degree weather :tup:

never had much problem with the powder in cold weather going off, but now a hole lot of rain is another issue

I hunted elk back in the early 90's with my muzzleloader in deep snow and cold weather. Was using Pyrodex and having problems with missfires. When it gets really nasty and cold I learned that nothing works better than real black powder. I would let my gun get temp acclimated on the way up to the hunt in the back of the truck and then load it and fire it at lunch time and reload it and fire it out at dusk when done hunting. messed up a lot of opportunities that year but learned a ton before finally killing my cow in the Dayton unit in January on a two month long season hunt. Since then I have used triple 7 but my hunts have been fair weather kind of hunts. If I was to hunt in the cold wet winter again I would use black powder again. One hint though, If you use it you need to clean your gun after every day of use. We have gotten used to all of this synthetic powder that we all love and real black powder is nasty corrosive stuff.

I was out around Colfax hunting for my second doe. Definitely cold but no issues with muzzy going off. Missed a doe Saturday evening right before dark (low single digits with wind chill well into the negatives). And ended up connecting the next morning with nice balmy temps of +10 :chuckle:. Now what it is too cold for is hanging deer. Went to start butchering my buck from Thanksgiving and it was frozen solid :bash:. I had to put two heaters in my shop to get it thawed out.

I was out in it my Knight worked just fine, but yeah it was really cold :yike:

I hunted Iowa in january muzzle for whitetails and it never got above 0 degrees, no issues with my remington and I shot Pyrodex with musket caps. I degreased the rifle before the trip and only lubed it with dry graphite.
