Is there any such thing? I love reading about all of the back country hunting adventures but i can't recall ever hearing about a back country whitetail hunt. I have seen mule deer nearly everywhere i have seen whitetail but i can't say the same for whitetails :dunno:
-
Ive seen several whitetail well over 5k ft. Found a few sheds @ 4k +. Have seen gagger wt bucks in the darnedest places.........they are where you find them....plenty of trails or grown over skid roads to get way back in and low and behold,,,,,,,,,whitetails.
-
Sort of..... Wilderness/mountain bucks. Panhandle of Idaho, Selkirks, pockets elsewhere. The biggest I killed, I was muledeer hunting in the backcountry, and on another note, the hunt I killed my biggest muley, as I was packing him out I jumped a big 5x5 whitey.
-
Sure there is...most of the bigger bucks I have seen have been up high and in deep away from any roads!
-
Shot mine this year at over 5k feet, A really old 4x4 and he wasn't the biggest buck around, wouldn't so much call it back country but high elevation on public land well off the main roads.
-
I have seen whitetail's all the way up and over sherman pass so i don't know if elevation has anything to do with whitetail population? :dunno: Does it? That sparked another curiosity what is the lowest elevation of any wilderness area other than juniper dunes?
-
Its out of state but there is a pretty cool backcountry hunt in Minnesota. It is in the boundary waters area. Canoe in only. I have wanted to do this hunt for a while...just havent been able to. There are a few in the Salmo priest.
-
I've thought about that Minnesota one as well, though I am not a whitetail fanatic, I liked the adventure aspect
-
That does sound fun Jimmy.I have been intending to explore some of the wilderness areas in better weather. The salmo priest sounds cool.

The whitetails around my place live there year round and I'm 4k+. My wife didn't think we had any deer around until I put up some trail cams. I see more bears than anything, only a few deer in the spring. The trail cams have pictures of a bunch of does/bucks. If I could just figure out how to tag one of the old bucks....

Are you in Washington or Utah?
-
I live in Utah, but own some property outside of Republic I vacation/hunt on. Mostly late season archery. We don't have any whitetails in Utah.
-
I did not know that.

Thanks for posting. We have property around Lake Curlew, in Ferry County, and it sits at 4300 feet. We are seeing more and more Whitetail "taking over" on our property. All we used to see up on top were Mule Deer. Kind of bums me out a bit but such is nature. BTW there are not any houses or farms within 3 miles of this property.

I am noticing the same in the areas that I hunt... Kind of bums me out too.

Don't mean to burst your bubble but Utah does have whitetails. At least around Roosevelt.
-
We also have some up on the Northern border along Idaho, but none that can be hunted. The state culled a large number the last 2 years to make sure that they don't move in and take over any Mulie areas. I'm sure we could find them if you looked hard. The VERY few I've seen in the basin (I've hunted elk there 25+ years) will most likely be culled next if the number ever grows much. The WDR is dead set on keep this a Mule deer state.

idk if you have read HIRSHEYS backcountry huntn trips, do a search, they are well worth the read, that women should be writing for bugle or outdoor life....AWESOME.....
-
I jumped a huge whitetail in MT this year at around 6000ft. In this area, the whitetail generally stay below 3000 and the Muleys rule the high country. In hindsight, I kind of wish I would have shot the whitetail buck but at the time I was completely focused on mule deer.
-
Ive seen some WT in some pretty crazy back country spots in MT. One in particular is a creek drainage that starts out as good WT habitat and goes all the way up to above tree line. Occasionally they would travel the creek up to tree line in the summer and early fall.

I have read her stories she's awesome! I agree she does wright very well.

There's plenty of whitetails in the Blues above 5k'. I don't think that alone qualifies as backcountry though. You can see them from the road.
They live in mule deer country down there. This is not 5k' but you get the idea.

Same goes for the east Okanogan area.
