Title: Nile unit (352)for late archery deer
Post by: steeleywhopper on November 07, 2008, 01:15:04 PM
I have a buddy who will be hunting  late archery elk in the Nile unit (352). I have the Multi season deer tag and he asked me to come over and hunt deer while he elk hunts. I did this with him during the early archery, but I did not see squat for deer. This was the first time I have ever been in that part of the state. I have no doubt that there are deer there, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I should expect during the later season.  We will be hunting above Johnson Canyon.

I wouldn't expect to see much, the deer population has really taken a hit because of the louse problem. I am sure there are some deer around but not many. Good Luck

Like I said before, the only time I have ever been in this area was in the early archery season. I was really surprised at the lack of deer. I think we only saw 3 does, and we saw them every day we were there. It looks like great country for deer and elk, but man talk about void of deer. I know it was not the pressure that kept them out of sight. I think we only ran into 4 guys all weekend. oh well if nothing else I will be there to help my buddy pack a elk out and if all goes well I will shoot a buck. It should be a good time no matter what. It is always fun to hunt new parts of the state.

If your going to hunt that unit you need to get away from the roads :twocents:. I have had a few shots a deer there but I wasnt to comfortable with shooting a 30-30 300yd's and when I tried to stalk in on one someone on the hill behind me shot it right as I was going to >:(.

popular area for the yakima crowd, my tip would be put some miles on your boots and just not be within glassing distance of any roads. if anything just wander around and learn some new areas :twocents: :twocents:

The Nile is one of the only places that I know half way decent in WA.  Everytime I have hunted there in the late season, I have seen tons of deer and usually 3 or more legal bucks every day.  However, I have only seen a couple that you could even come close to calling a trophy.  Mostly just little guys.

If you want to get an idea of how bad it is look at the 2007 hunt statistics for the unit.
2007 Modern Firearm deer
352 - NILE
PMU: P35

 29
 0
 29
 452
 6.4% THATS BAD!!!!
 2011
 69.3
Even worse for archery at 3.6% and muzzleloader was a crappy 1.5% SUCCESS RATE(LACK THEREOF!!!)
