Title: Canadian Belt Knife
Post by: rainshadow1 on November 07, 2008, 02:41:26 PM
I had a member from  the Custom Calls forum asking me about a Canadian Belt Knife, al-la Russell Knives from the old North American trapline days. He wanted to wait, but I wanted to see if I had what it took. I built it to spec...

I steeled my nerves, and slapped down the payment for a ridiculously expensive piece of 1/8" Crucible CPM S30V Stainless. I cut out and ground this one, and a little "necker" that's going to be on the bench next, if I can help it!

This is modeled after the Russell Canadian Belt Knife. It's a "Willow Leaf" blade design, and a very ergonomic little grip. It handles wonderfully.

The grind is convex, the cutting edge is the slightest slope I could possibly make it. And the edge immediately pops the hairs off my arm all along its length. The grind is mine, the Heat Treat is by Gene Martin, Provision Forge, Williams OR.

This Crucible S30V is the best performing knife Stainless on the market, and it's hardened to perfection by a meticulous professional Smith. (It took a little bit of doing to get it shaving sharp, but it should stay that way for a long time!)

The grip is Desert Ironwood Burl. It's bookmatched, but there's so much figure you can't really tell. Spaced with White carbon fiber. Pinned with 2 silver nickle pins and a brass mosaic. It's also CA stabilized.

The Sheath will be 11oz Leather, in a left side / right hand cross-draw configuration. The blade will ride point back edge down right along the belt, and the grip will rise just to the top edge of the belt. (I've already planned out the sheath, so that's the only option.) It'll be right hand cross draw, left hand combat draw.

Here's some pics of the knife. If it lasts long enough, I'll do some tent photos with the sheath included.
