might go antelope hunting in Wyoming next year. have a 243 and a 25-06. which would be the better gun? what size bullet? I reload, mike w

Take the one you're more accurate with/like more, they'll both work well
-
My buddy lives in Cheyenne and uses a 25-06.
-
.243 in 80gr would be my choice, but again whatever youre more comfortable shooting.
-

Best advice for ANY situation.

:yeah:
Thats why we took 9 with my .257 Roberts

25-06 is a better choice for long range shots than a 243.

Don't overthink an antelope gun. You don't have to shoot them at 600 yards. The majority of mine have been killed at under 200.
They are easy to kill. Many goats die each year from .22-250s and .220 Swifts.
Either gun is fine. Any bullet is fine. Keep in mind that a ballistic tip type bullet will ruin more of the precious little meat on an antelope if you hit a shoulder.
They are fantastic table fare.

I agree either one will work just fine, but I'd go with the 25-06 just because it has a little more horsepower behind it. Better for those 300+ yard shots. But again, either one will work and the antelope surely won't be able to tell the difference.

My feelings exactly

Splitshot, I used a .25-06 with a 120 grain Hornady HP since 1985. It's dropped a fair amount of antelope for me. I use a BDC scope and range finder.

You mean Wyoming antelope in general? It varies unit to unit. Some you can draw as a non-resident every year, others will take 6+ years, largely depending on perceived trophy potential and access to public land. You can find the draw percentages for each unit on Wyoming's website.

With respect to the original post, all things being equal in terms of comfort and preference, the 25-06 shoots longer and flatter, which can come in handy. That being said, I've taken six antelope, none of which were over 250 yards.

wow, I looked and looked. lol. thank you for your reply it was very helpful on where to put in for.
-
man, you're WAY overthinking it! antelope could probably be brought down with a slingshot!!! :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
The wind can really blow in WY. I would use the .25-06, but of course I would bring both and use the .243 on a doe or two
-
375 H&H all the way. I don't want them limping away.

:yeah: Whatever You Do Shoot Them Broadside Through The Ribs So You Don't Loose Anymeat

Like they would if you used a 257 Roberts?
-
Both are excellent calibers for antelope. The important thing like stated above is to practice and shoot straight.
-
Killed 8 of my 10 antelope bucks with a 257 Robert's and the other two with a 7x57 and a 6.5x55. They all worked great.
-
I'd bring both in case of a broken firing pin or scope or something but my go to would be the 25-06 just cause its so damn windy out there so the heavier bullet maybe a better choice. I shot 3 this year and I used a 220 swift, a 243, and a 7mm Mag.

if your looking to buy new then look at a 6.5 creedmore....

If you're disabled, apply for the disabled permits to hunt from the road and shoot from a vehicle. I did and got my disabled permits back already. Also, from what my disabled vet, that I've known since high school that I'll be hunting with, told me is, ALL disabled hunters get to hunt 5 days BEFORE ANY hunter gets to start hunting anywhere in Wyoming.
This is what he's told me, since I've never hunted in Wyoming.....
