Title: Thanksgiving Bird
Post by: jblackburn on December 13, 2013, 04:31:09 PM
After finally getting resident status and not having much luck finding a legal deer, I set out to get a bird for Thanksgiving during WSU's break.  I was hunting a friend's place that was loaded with birds in October, but as luck would have it, in a couple days of hunting, I never saw/heard any.

I got a lead on where some turkeys hang out and boy were they ever!  I counted over 140 birds behind a farmer's house, and after a little investigating I found his name and he gave me permission!

The morning I hunted that farm there was a flock of around 50 birds in the field.  I busted the flock up and birds went everywhere.  I found a good tree to sit by and soon the hens were assembly yelping and the young birds were kee keeing like crazy!  I joined the conversation alternating between yelping and kee kees and soon 8 birds came around the corner, but skirted my at 80 yards. Suddenly a hen came flying in and landed about 15 yards from me.  She was standing there calling and I was about to bust her when I glanced left and saw for birds at less than 10 yards!  Two jakes stopped at the little ditch to get a drink and I was able to get the gun up and bust one at 7 steps!  When the gun went off, turkeys went everywhere!

He weighed in just over 12 pounds and was delicious!
