Title: Coyotes in Mason County?
Post by: Jacob Tieszen on December 15, 2013, 06:50:56 PM
Hey guys!

Well I struck out on deer this year. Still love being in the woods, whether im just scouting, hiking, or hunting.

Winter break starts in a week, and my buddy and I want to go do some yote hunting. We don't know where we should go, we live in Belfair. I figured We will just find a nice clearing, do a wounded rabbit call and wait for them to come in to us. If anyone knows any spots that would be good, a PM would be appreciated. Thanks!

I used to live on Maggie Lake, lots of areas out in that area if you are going to do some calling. Now that I think about it, used to be a lot of open areas, I am sure some of it is overgrown now. What about the old pheasant release site? Or up by the dump past sand hill? Lots of places up in that area too.

Most of the "Huntable" areas around here (belfair, kitsap) are really pressured.
I've actually seen more coyotes in town than out in the woods.
I know a ton of guys that hunt coyotes around here with very little success.
The only guy I know who actually consistantly kills these buggers, uses a 12 ga and only uses hand calls.
More specifically, he only uses challenge calls or other coyote sounds.
You see, the problem is there are a TON of coyotes around here, so the fight for space is key amongst coyotes around here. They are very teritorrial.
My friend usually hunts the thickest darkest spots he can, and calls the mean buggers into about 20 yards.
Seriously, I think he's onto something. Because the "fake" dying animal sounds are crap... atleast around here.
