Title: New fly tied. Will it work?
Post by: Fishaholic on December 19, 2013, 04:44:31 PM: Just wondering if something like this will work? I Just took up fly tying and this is my 6th fly I have tied. What do ya guys think?

Fly tying is a hoot.

Post by: duckmen1 on December 19, 2013, 05:00:51 PM: Many different forms of flys can be made. Sure it will work if presented correctly under the right circumstances.
One fly I would try to key in on making for fishing streams is caddis. By all means have caddis with you. When fishing streams it is my top producer. I got a hold of antelope capes to use for the main fluff from someone I knew and it will out fish any other fly I use. But elk hide works great to.
If fishing lakes make an assortment of wooly buggers. Purple and black. Weight them to get them deep with lead core around shank of hook while tying.
Those are my go to flies for friends and family and they never fail.

I cant find any marabou in Aberdeen or I would be tying jigs. lol

Some of my first flies were just plain embarrassing...

DO the same style with peacock and wire ribbing for support, and you have a very productive river fly. Soft partridge hackle added is another variation as mentioned, or when you get fancy, dubbed rabbit fur and tease out some guard hairs. Lots of variety on that simple pattern. You can even lean the body of it down a bit and it will be a good lake fly as well.

I'll give you some heckle right now - ha :chuckle: But what you want is 'hackle'... :tung:

You should spend some time in places like http://www.west-fly-fishing.com/entomology/entomology.shtml (http://www.west-fly-fishing.com/entomology/entomology.shtml) and learn some entomology and patterns. Can get very detailed and complicated. So don't feel like you have to figure this all out to be successful. Heck, if you learn to tie a decent woolly bugger, you'll be able to catch just about any fish in the state from salmon, steelhead, and trout, to bass and crappie and even some salwater fish. 'Matching the hatch' isn't typically a huge deal for most of our fishing around here. But other times it is the only game in town and you better get it right - along with perfect presentation. But don't stress about it. :twocents:

If I come across any more I will let you know. Just keep practicing. If you ever get to Lacey there is a great fly/jig tying supply shop on Pacific that has every kind of everythng that you need to tie stuff. They also sell chennille and yarn by the foot.

Yup lol the vice is ugly but it holds my hooks well.

One of the best I ever tied was a killer on sea run cuts as well as steelhead. It was a black bodied wooly with a wrap or two of chenile (sp?) for a head. It was my "no name" fly. Worked great. I would use a few wraps of lead around the shank to make it sink slowly.

Now I'm obsessed with spey and dee flies, major $$$ in just one fly! But really, simple does the job and allows you to fish better since your not worried about losing the 1 minute fly.
