Just bought the above rifle for my wife for next years elk hunting season and threw a pro staff scope on there and could not be happier. Took it too the range and even her as a first time shooter was driving nails at 100 yds. I'll prob pick one up for myself, heck I even like the feel of the compact versus my full size mod 700.

I have several Ruger rifles and love them all. That new American is a nice rifle for the money, tang safety and the new Ruger Marksman adjustable trigger. :tup:

IMHO there's a lot to like about a compact rifle in a soft recoiling caliber (.243, .260, or 7mm-08). I have a Remington Model 7 youth in .260 rem that I purchased for my kids to use. Now that they've grown up, I still have it and love shooting it. Easy to carry hunting and a joy to shoot. Sure am thinking about a Ruger Amerian in 7mm-08. Might need to wait though. Ruger is adding Americans in .223 and also adding stainless options in March!

They are nice little guns. I have not played with the compact yet.

They are out in 22-250 as well.
IMHO there's a lot to like about a compact rifle in a soft recoiling caliber (.243, .260, or 7mm-08). I have a Remington Model 7 youth in .260 rem that I purchased for my kids to use. Now that they've grown up, I still have it and love shooting it. Easy to carry hunting and a joy to shoot.
My daughter uses a Ruger M77 Hawkeye Compact in 7mm-08, with a 16.5" barrel that shoots lights out and easy to carry too. Ruger has sure done their best to put a quality, accurate youth gun on the market. :tup:

Yeah I've had the pleasure to shoot a lot of different rifles. Sakos, tikkas, rems, savage, etc.... And I would recommend this rifle hands down. I actually bought an ar at the same time and have shot the 7mm way more already lol. Glad that it will get passed down to my kids to kill elk with.

I'm surprised that they are so well liked. I handled one while looking for a gun for the ol lady and thought it felt pretty cheesy? I understand they are an inexpensive starter gun but I wasn't overly impressed...Good to hear they shoot well tho-

What felt cheesy about it? The bolt slides like a hot knife through butter.

Lets face it, at that price point nothing is going to feel hand built, by any manufacturer. ;)

Overall feel and sloppy bolt. Not trying to bash, that was just my first impression....Im still looking for a gun for her, I will have to give em another look. I own numerous rugers including rifles, shotguns and pistols and have been pleased with them all.

stainless Ruger Americans will be Hitting the shelves in a few months, I'm going to pick one up in .308.

I'm always curious when I see different calibers, that to my uneducated (in this aspect anyways) eye seem to be almost identical. How does reducing the bullet diameter by 0.62 mm change the .308 characteristics? Maybe a little better BC because it is longer for its width? A little more velocity with a slightly lighter bullet? Same velocity, less kick, smaller bullet?
I am definitely not bashing the 7mm-08, just curious. Thanks.

Ruger did a nice job on those Americans. A friend of mine picked up two rimfires and says he likes the carbine better. They were rare birds when he got them, and now they are more available. The 7mm-08 is getting to be quite popular. I call it the new .270 Winchester cartridge. The 270 Win was based on the 30-06 case, and the .308 was just a shorter version of the 30-06 case so it would give pretty much the same ballistics in a shorter action. The 7mm-08 is just a 308 made to shoot longer ranges. :twocents: The Rugers are covered by a warranty that is iron-clad. A guy I know bought a Ruger pistol at a pawn shop, didn't like the way it worked, so he sent it to Ruger. They fixed it, put new sights on it, and reblued it and sent it back to him and didn't charge him a dime! And he wasn't even the original owner of the gun... :tup:
