Heard from my niece this evening that there has been a report of a cougar kill in town and additional bones found under the South Bridge in town. Will find out more details tomorrow when I can get in touch with property owner and Gammie? In the mean time when the dog goes for a walk so goes the 686.

Wildlife surely could care less if the cats haze and kill deer all year.
Should hunters stand by and watch the deer herds in this state disappear completely?

Ok well as stated in original post I said I'd get back as soon as I had some type of Confirmation in regards to the cougar kill in the town of Winthrop. Got in touch with the land owner and she confirmed she lost a barn cat and had a deer kill at her place, Corrals on the south end of town, Christmas Day. Well being the investigative person I am I followed the tracks from her corrals to under the bridge at the south end of town where I located the deer carcass all covered with brush and grass. Then proceeded to follow the tracks up river to under the Middle bridge and off through the ? woods? further upriver for approximately 1/3 mile doesn't look to be a very large cat as the tracks are slightly larger than a cigarette pack, took pics with ancient phone and will try to upload but no guarantees. Heard today at lunch that 4 other cats have been killed so far this week in the area by the gammies.
Not sure what the gammies are going to do about this one I suspicion I know where this one is holed up but being in town can't go get it without a gammie. Would be nice if they'd give me first crack at it with the leg work I have done so far. Or at least let me use my caller and see if I can get it into my yard.
Nothing exciting but said I'd follow up and report and this is it. Everyone have a Happy and healthy New Year

Wow thats a big cat, also wow you can afford Marlboros LOL :chuckle:
-
Yea still get them when I do my monthly trip to the VA in Spokane stop on Base down to less than 1/2 pack per day
-
Seems like they killed a cat in the feedyard there about a decade ago. Time flies though so maybe???
Jingles is right, does look like a young one. Just a baby Stevemiller
-
wow,how far across an adults foot print?ive never seen a track in the snow yet.
-
Turn the malb on its side and double it down to minus a half.

It's a small cat - two years at best
-
Nothing else to do when the temps are only in the teens so put a trail camera in the carcass and had a visitor last night
-
Nice work jingles...
Is your unit closed or still open? Just follow the tracks of the cougar to it's bed (probably in the nearest brushy canyon) and whammo, cougar down.
-
More like, under someones front porch where he is hunting. :chuckle:

:chuckle: :chuckle: yeah, something like that...
-
As per above followed tracks yesterday for about 1/3 mile from kill sight to an old barn and unless Gammies and Town council give permission this cat is probably safe from a lead injection
-
Just go in there and chase him out so he leaves the city limits. :chuckle:

Wish I could hunt this one even if it is a youngster. You would not believe the number of folks around here that don't get it that a cougar in town can be dangerous to pets and people.
-
They must think he is there for a walk in the park. :chuckle:
Only three things matter in a predator's life, self preservation, sex, and food, judging form the porch light in the background, it appears the cat is not worried about being in town, and I doubt the cougar is interested in mating with your local huggers. :chuckle:

I'm happy the school isn't there anymore, or I'd be a little more proactive. I imagine that cat is living on housepets and roadkill. Plenty of both I guess.

archery?
-
:yeah: nice tree stand, maybe a crossbow if your not a archery guy
-
You might want to get on it with hunting that cougar cause I'm sure that unit is one the list to be closed due to quota met on the 1st!

Happens in town there more then most people know. Remember bear in the trees above the duck, cougars up on Cassal. Lots of house pets dissappearing every winter right in town. Part of the territory of living up there :)

Did you know Ella Schroeder? Carries Mom (married my brother David). She used to make the pastries for the Burger Queen. She was there one early morning as usual, and the doorknob was rattling, like someone was trying to get in. These days, you pull a gun and shoot a Meth head. Those days you let the person in. ANYHOW, she opens the door and here is a blackbear standing there licking the maple off of the door. She must have taken something out to the trash (two day olds probably) and got some on her hand. :chuckle: I still laugh at that. and apparently the bear was so enamored with what was on the door knob or the smell coming out of the Bakery, dang if he just stood there. Man I loved growing up there.
Ironically one of my cougar stories revolves around her house on the back side of the river. The gamies finally came and tranquilized them and moved them, after we watched them for a couple days hanging out on the ditch bank and her yard, they crossed the river and starting living in my moms barn. Nothing like going out to feed the ponies, look up and there is a cougar standing there stairing at you.

Run the cat over with your ATV....... :chuckle: Wouldn't that really irk the treehugers over yonder.....
-
Good job jings ....Got me a camera now and can not wait to put it out there ....maybe it will stop by 3 fingers to get a drink ... :dunno: :chuckle:

I used to get a kick out of the welfareites I saw around here...First of the month it was Steak and Eggs, coffee, and Marlboros. By the end of the month it was a shared cup of coffee and a pack of GPC's. The next month it would start all over! :chuckle:

Bone,
I saw the same type of bear burglary in progress in Alaska at the cannery kitchen/cafeteria,Bear half through a screen door trying like heck to get in,the cook armed with a .45 in one hand and a broom in the other startled the bear and ran him off,the screendoor was ripped off and transported a good 30 feet down the road before it totally self destructed. My dads buddy was the cannery superintendant, the year before he let the air out of a black bear with his .357 when it tried to get snitty with him in the roadway by the kitchen.
