Title: Hunting GPS Maps on Google Earth.
Post by: Smossy on December 30, 2013, 07:17:55 PM
Ive recently noticed that there is a way to view HuntWA features on google earth.
My question is...

If I have the GPS map SD card (I got one for Christmas) Is there any way to view it through google earth, or is it strictly for basecamp/mobile gps?
Do I have to actually purchase the additional google earth addon that goes to google earth for the $40? I dont really like basecamp and most of my locations are saved through google earth. Id like to integrate them together if possible.

Update - Found out from another forum that Its a whole different product, Its a $40 purchase and its an add-on for google earth only, It's an overlay that shows you names and property boundaries. Its intended use is for scouting. Not transferable to a handheld GPS.

Whenever I have had to transfer one platform's data files to another (e.g., Nat. Geo. Topo. to Garmin to GE, etc.) GPSBabel has been invaluable.

http://www.gpsbabel.org/ (http://www.gpsbabel.org/)

I am not aware of the format of the Hunting GPS Maps data, but if it is viewable on your GPS as a route or waypoints, you should be able to get it off the GPS into a usable format for conversion to GE.

I'd check the EULA on Hunting GPS Maps, though.  I would be surprised if that was an authorized use, since they appear to have a competing product.

Id have no idea how to do that or even where to start.

On google earth,  you are able to open .kmz and .kml files, which can contain route and/or waypoint data.   My National Geographic TOPO program saves in .tpg and .tpo files, which can also contain route and/or waypoint data.  That GPSBabel software is useful for creating the .kml files from other files.

I'd imagine that the Hunting GPS Maps data is likely just another file format, which if/when it is converted to a .kml file, for example, could be opened in Google Earth.

I just don't know what technological protections and/or legal restrictions are in place with that data that might cause you to have to import the data first to another program.

Invested the $40 into the Addon for Google Earth, Ill be the first to admit its worth every dollar. Much more user friendly, Easy to navigate address's/points of interest and know exactly who owns what. First 10 minutes on it Ive already figured out the answer to most of my questions on huntable locations. To those of you who scout on PC alot, Id highly recommend this program.

If you have a Garmin GPs which I assume, why add google earth when you can add on Garmin's Birdseye, which is basically Garmin's verson of google earth designed for Garmin's specifically? :dunno:

I have been looking into this recently and stumbled onto a website  www.gpsfiledepot.com (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com) and it appears they have downloadable maps for which ever state you select, for free. I haven't tried to load one, have any of you used this site?

Birdseye is $29. I don't have a garmin GPS yet. Google Earth Add-on is for scouting from home. I have and use google earth, Have all my spots and way-points already saved. The addon just enhances it and gives me that extra oomph.

Is there a way to save waypoints and spots/tracks into google earth then have them to save for the hunting sd card so I can see my spots on my gps unit.

Yes if you use the garmin basecamp software.  Its like google earth.  You can do all that I think.  You can scout and create a route/track and put it on gps overlayed with birdseye sat. image.  Really neat, I havent got to deep into it.  I mark a few p.o.i and get the sat. images and go!

What I did was to buy birdseye for 1 year and download the sat. images of my areas I might go, then didnt renew it.  Basecamp didnt cost me money-i think it came with gps unit at purchase for download?  I dont remember.  I use google earth before basecamp to play around but when Im ready I go to basecamp and plan.  Garmin and google dont seem compatible! :chuckle:
