Title: Deshutes 666 Cow hunt help
Post by: Hairhunter on December 31, 2013, 12:54:28 AM
Any advise or Landowners that would help out on a Cow hunt coming up on the 16th of Jan. in unit 666 Deshutes. It is for my buddies 75 year old dad. He can still shoot straight!
 Thanks,
 Dave.

My buddies daughter drew this tag a few years back and there is a "Silver Springs Ranch" off Warwick and Military road outside Rainer that she contacted. I don't know how to get in touch with them. Good Luck.

His name is Greg Shoenbachler. Pretty sure I butchered the spelling of his last name but he owns Silver Springs. Not sure on numbers of elk in that neck of the woods though.

The elk dont use that land currently much.  Too many beef overgrazing it.  They are close however-hint hint.  I drive it all the time.  Last time I talked to owner (12 years ago he wanted cash to hunt his land).  Seen 5 cows last week close by.

The big land owners in that general area (Greg, Jerry, Turners) do not allow hunting on their land.  Besides, most of the elk that are usually in that herd have moved into the 667. I live in the area and haven't seen nor heard of any elk on the Silver Springs Ranch in a while.  That composting plant on their land has also displaced the elk. Nothing like waiting until the last minute and begging for help.  You should have been knocking in doors months ago.  You might be stuck hunting at the end of Vantine Road or knocking on the Peterson's (Acme Cattle Co.) door.   There is a good herd on the Peterson's spread but they usually only let kin folk hunt it.

This is a permit that you really should only apply for if you live in the area. I wouldn't apply for it and I live pretty much on the boundary of the unit.

 :yeah:
Out of the area folks get hung up on the "any elk" description of that tag and think that the place is a slam dunk and over run with animals.  I wouldn't apply for it and I know a lot of the big land owners.  Your best bet would have taken the class, gotten a Ft. Lewis hunting pass and hunted the millitary rez.  There are a lot of elk in certain spots on the rez.
