Title: Western WA yotes
Post by: Tradbowhunter on January 09, 2014, 10:43:44 AM
Anyone in western WA care to do some coyote hunting soon? Also, has anyone taken a coyote with traditional gear?

Western wa coyote with traditional gear is a tough one. I'd suggest making a bait pile for a week or two refreshing it and then sit on it a couple days and you should do good. That has been my most successful way of targeting yotes. Put a game cam up with the bait pile if you can and that will tell you exactly what's coming in.
Good luck

I'm lucky enough to live next to a huge field that they're hanging out around. As it's gotten colder I've heard more and more of them at night, sometimes sounding like they're right outside the house. Think a bait pile or some calling would work better? or both? I haven't really done any coyote hunting, just while I was already out for something else.

Trad gear is still going to be tough.  I'd say a groundblind or a treestand and calling for immediate results.  At the same time set up a bait somewhere and maybe a treestand and when they start hitting it sit up there.  Coyotes are extremely nervous around bait sites for the most part, so having cover to draw your bow might be a little rough.

Too bad WA doesn't allow for anything besides live cage traps too  :'( Thanks for the feedback, that helps!

I'd go with a call and a shotgun myself if possible, That or a quiet rimfire...

This time of year coyote calls will likely work better since they are near breeding time :twocents:

It's on the edge but still within city limits in King County, otherwise I'd use a rifle.

Bummer.  Well with the right setup your bow would work, but it'd take a while to get a system down.

I see them when I'm out jogging almost daily lately, and hear them every night. Folks in the area say they're not skittish at all around people and will come right up to a truck. Maybe I'll bring some Beggin Strips or Snausages out with me?  :lol4:

I'm looking to get into predator hunting! Not much of a stick and string type of guy but I do have a mouth call and some buck shot  8)

Best way to hunt with trad gear is just do it.  Don't worry what others think, try it and gain from the experience.
