I put out some colony sets, and a few mink sets today before the Seahawk game. Had a lot of fun just figuring out what I was doing.
I was wondering if anyone has built any beaver, otter swim through traps with gravity doors? Like a big colony rat trap.

There are a few different threads on that stuff in the Trappers thread. Take a look around in there and see what you can find. Me and the Lady may start trapping this year but with things going how they are we really dont know if we will have the time. We got our trappers class done this year though, was quite entertaining. Goodluck to you and your new hobby and keep us posted on how everything goes.

Yes on the gravity doors for beaver, not so good for otter. Built like a colony trap I think you will miss a few beaver and most otter. You will need some kind of frame for the trap and doors though or they will wreck the trap and get out.

Ok, Thanks Bruce.

Here is a picture of what I think your looking for, they do work but seem to work better in dirty water conditions. The one pictured is 14 x 14 x 48 with a full frame.
Good luck.

Is there some kind of trigger with that trap, or just free swinging doors?
-
gravity set up. so no trigger no springs. I'm guessing you were thinking of a guillotine style door.

No, that's what I was looking for. I think I can build a few of these fairly cheap. After this season I'll build some with triggers, springs, and maybe some guillotine like yours.
Did you build your traps or buy them?
-
The trap design above doesn't have a trigger system but it will catch more beaver w/ one. Hump has a neat trigger on his. Good Luck

I bought them...

use 1/4 in rod for the frame and doors to keep the beaver from bending them.

Trapped our first rats today  I''m still at work, but my son checked our rat trap after school, and we had a double
-
Nice work Turner 89.Last time I seen you trap muskrat was in 86.
-
RATS!!

Cool, I bet he was excited!

Yes he was. I think he's going to be a good partner.

Checked our traps the other night in the dark. No fur, but caught this nice cutthroat. I knew there was fish in this little creek, but didn't think there would be one this big.
Checking the traps at night is actually a lot of fun. I thought it would be a pain in the butt.
-
Some nights after work, checking traps in multiple locations, is indeed, a pain in the butt. (not so much on very successful nights though!)
-
That's pretty cool! I check all my traps at night, Thursday and Friday are the only days that I get to run around during the day.
-
Were starting to have a little more success.
-
Nice! I've got many tools that I use to make trapping easier. My favorite one being what I like to call "the boy".

That's funny :chuckle: ......

Big surprise in my muskrat trap tonight. Caught around a 20# beaver in my 8 x 16 x 24'' rat trap. I can't believe he went into it.
-
Good job Turner ...That's great to have your boy out there with you ..seems you already have it figured out

Cool thread, Love the new trapper threads including my own. Just started this year and boy has it been one heck of an experience Its like christmas everytime I go out at night to check my traps "I wonder what Im gonna get"
-
:yeah:
-
Haha very cool.
-
We finally trapped a mink today. We planned on pulling our traps out of this spot after about 3 weeks, with only one muskrat. We were pretty pumped when we saw the door was down.
-
The boy looks like a happy trapper, nice catch.
-
Excellent! Looks like a good one too.
-
I caught another Beaver in my muskrat trap this last weekend. This time he tore the trap up pretty good. That's 2 beaver in this trap, and not any muskrat in this set. The trap was one of the first ones I built. 8x16x36. 4 doors.
-
Youve had one heck of a year turner. Good stuff man. Cant say the same for myself. Keep up the good work. Two weeks and counting.
-
Caught this big beaver in a trap we built for beaver. got another one tonight.
-
That's a good one! Have you been weighing them? Did you sell any or are you hoarding fur? :chuckle:
-
I wieghed the one before the big one.it weighed 29#. I guessed the big one wieghed about 20#that more. It made me question the wisdom of setting my trap that far from the road.roadway :chuckle:
I havent sold anything yet. I may be a hoarder. :chuckle:
-
If you hold them over the summer they will be stale goods and be of less value.
-
I 'm hoping to do it shortly after the season closes.
-
We checked, and pulled the remainder of our traps today. We caught another mink, and a muskrat to end the year. Never did trap a bobcat this year, but learned a lot, and had a great time.

Awesome, thanks for sharing the photos.
