Title: Tree Stand Safety
Post by: Intruder on November 13, 2008, 11:47:42 AM
I'm completely new to tree stand hunting and would like to know if anyone has any tricks regarding safety measures.  I've got a full body harness and the strap the goes around the tree while you climb.  Just wondering if there a better/easier way to go up and down while still maintaining safety.  The strap works but it's kinda a pain to slide up and down.  Is there a simple cure?

Truly I have been hunting from a Treestand for years and there is simply no way to do it safely AND easily.  I took one fall about 18'  right around 11 years ago and that convinced me to not worry about it being easy and not minding it being a total pain in the arse to go up the tree with steps or a ladder in place and wearing my harness attached to the tree and just be safe about it.  So my answer is no, there is no cure I've found.  I'm just damn thankful I got lucky.

I'm never that lucky... I don't want to take the chance.

Anyone ever seen/used 1 of these: http://www.integratedsafety.us/store/

Stop by any safety supply store and pick up one of them ratcheting safety harness lanyards. They allow you to move around and keep any slack out of the line. If you fall, they work like a seat belt in a car, and lock up. The less slack you have, they less chance of testicular injury by the crotch straps. :yike:

I fell in a full harness at work while about 100' up on a tower. Talk about scare the crap outta ya. The harness and lanyard did its job. Just make sure your leg straps are fairly tight.

I like a strap attached to the tree. If I need to lean out to make a shot, my strap will support me.

LOL.. no... I had the crotch straps tight.  I learned that valuable lesson when I used to skydive. One guy I used to jump with got Righty under the strap when the chute opened. Nothing like going from 120mph to 20mph with your nut under a strap.  :yike:
