Nice looking sidearm! I have a Glock 20 and I'm gathering components to reload, can't find 10mm around here for crap.

When does the season open up to hunt ATV's? (Sorry I couldn't resist)

I know I'll get the business about ATV hunting.......

www.gunbot.com (http://www.gunbot.com) (?) and www.gunbroker.com (http://www.gunbroker.com) has a lot of loaded 10mm ammo for sale.  Just know what 10mm ammo is going for so you won't pay too much. I carry a 29SF in 10mm. Love that caliber.

I'm using underwood ammo right now. No complaints, all have fed properly and seem to group well.

You shooting it through a Glock ? I used some crappy wad cutters and it wouldn't feed maybe 6 times. I know it's the ammo. The gun got rave reviews, that's why I bought it. I want it for bear/wolf hunting if I'm lucky enough to have one near the road.

I'm using a G20 with a few goodies.

I would advise against shooting non-jacketed bullets too.   Wadcutters are low power so they'll stovepipe on ya, and all that lead is going to foul things up.

change that recoil spring to a 20# spring and run the big stuff through it.  You'll need a special tool to get it done, paper clip tool.

I don't think I'll need a bigger spring. I just have to buy some good ammo. I had the wad cutters for my 29sf.
I do have that tool for removing the barrel. Can you believe that ???

I think it's www.gunbot.com (http://www.gunbot.com) that has all the ammo listed where you can buy any and all ammo. The shipping is darn near $20 form some and most of the sellers.
I use www.grafs.com (http://www.grafs.com) They use FEDEX and charge $ 6.95 for home delivery.

I was going to give you a bad time about shooting ATV's but the other guys beat me to it!  :chuckle: Nice gun, Camp!  Everyone I know that has one loves it.  The reason it didn't get to be popular, is that the FBI was going to adopt it, but in testing they found that their female agents couldn't control the recoil, so they went to the 40 S&W instead.  Just the same bullet diameter in a shorter case....  :chuckle:

I carry a Glock 29 sf, so this one shoots like a 357. Not bad at all. I have hands that look like hams anyhow, maybe that helps.

There's a Lady that has a laser engraving business here in Wenatchee who will engrave anything you want on that slide. (Maybe A picture of your ATV?  :chuckle: ) I've had her do AR Lowers, Uppers, And Magazines for me.  Very reasonable price, too!  Lots less than other outfits that advertise laser engraving on gun parts charge.

I have the same gun. I replaced the FO element with the dawson precision stuff. ...much brighter.  I added a flat bottom firing pin stop, 22lbs spring and tuned the ejector. The gun was throwing my hard to find brass into the next zipcode, now it stacks it up 8 feet away. The gun will feed from a 45 magazine. .....I like that. NICE!

I really like my G29.

Prvi Partizan, Federal Hydrashok, and Underwood. Eats it all with no problems.

I really like the wide performance range in ammo thats available for the 10mm. Subsonic 350ft lb all the way up to 2400 fps, 1050 ft lbs

I've got 5 or 6 hundred 200gr xtps and 1000 180gr hardcast.  I like the 38 - 40 bullets that mimic the 200gr double tap in meplats. ....but are actually available. ....hint.

I miss my 10mm 1911. The Dan Wesson CCBT 10mm was a sweet gun, but I sold it in a moment of stupidity. I tried both Glocks and never learned to love them.

How accurate is your Rock Island? I may need to get one to replace the Kimber 45. I have piles of 10mm brass and a few thousand 200+ grain bullets sitting here waiting to get used.

I've only shot crappy wad cutters in the 10. I don't have extra GOOD ammo just to plink. Plus, I don't have any reloading dies for a 10mm since I won't be shooting it a lot. It's my ATV, wolf, bear survival tool. It did shoot nice and solid though. My gunsmith said the RIA was as good as Kimber...

I reload both 40 and 10mm. The dies for 40 and 10mm are one in the same! the diameter is identical however the case size and primers are different. Don't shoot the 40 in the 10mm and remember to back the die out so you don't crush your ten brass and your good to go!

I should have said it different, .40 cal reloading dies work for 10mm.
Shooting .40 out of a 10mm would be dangerous.

The length of the .40 case is much shorter then the 10mm case, so you could have bullets hitting the edge of the barrel rifling .

If the extractor will hold it......there's zero harm in shooting 40 from a 10mm.  The RIA is a bunch of decent parts put together decently.  The barrel is miles away from a kart.....but even though it shows some tool marks, it shoots well and cleans reasonably.  I have a nice delta that is a bit lighter and better finished that I don't shoot due to my love for the RIA. It took some tuning to get what I consider correct,  but I am anal and own my own machine shop so I had no issues.  In truth,  if a guy spent a few hours blending and fitted a quality barrel. ....you could park it next to a new anything and it would be in the hunt.

I was wondering what the dangers were, as I've shot over 5000 rounds of 40 in my 10mm handguns.
Most were fired in 2 factory Glock 20's with the factory 10mm barrel and several hundred fired in my several S&W 610's. (10mm revolvers).
It would be akin to saying you shouldn't fire 38sepcial in a 357Mag.
Title: Re: Rock Island 10mm Pistol for ATV hunting..........
Post by: KFhunter on January 16, 2014, 01:32:49 PM
How's your extractors?

Personally I just use a .40 S&W barrel in my G20 and don't rely on the extractor holding the primer tight against the breach face for the firing pin to hit it, the round jumps forward a tad then as the round fires slams back against the breach face,  since the head space is so far off you're flaming the chamber pretty good.

.38 vs .357 works because it indexes off the rim of the cartridge, but the .40 is rimless - the only thing holding is the extractor.

I'd do it if I needed too, but I wouldn't do it just because. Accuracy is going to suffer too.  I just don't see the point in wasting ammo and stressing a good extractor and needless wear and tear on the weapon.

So if a 40 fires in a 10mm chamber (say a S&W610) and flame cuts the chamber why won't a 38 special flame cut a S&W model 19?

Because rubber moon clips are tougher than steel extractors.

I shot a lot of 40s&w in my 610 revolver and there's no problem as long as you clean the chambers afterwards. I don't think flame cutting is the issue as much as carbon fouling build up in the chamber. I do the same with 38/357, 44 spcl/mag, and. 45 colt/454/460 revolvers.

If you have tight, well tuned extractors I don't see too much of an issue with 49s in a 10 mm pistol. I just think reliability could suffer since your head spacing wth the extractor instead of the case mouth like normal.

Dumb thought on my part, but, if a pistol was made to shoot 40/10mm, don't you think it would be advertised as a 40/10mm pistol. Must be a reason that I wouldn't want to find out about the hard way......... :dunno: I'm talking pistol, not revolver.
