So I was thinking about going out and cutting firewood this spring /summer .the question is because I haven't done this before that im sure there is a permit to get and certain rules on where and what you can cut. Any info or help appreciated . Looking to go anywhere between Seattle and ellensburg give or take .

The DNR website lists available permits. Depending on where you are, they sell out in a big hurry. JBLM does firewood permits, as do the federal agencies. I'd check directly with each one. The other option that can be good is to look for people with trees down in their yard/property or construction site. Many of them, especially in the city, will be happy for it to be gone.

During the big freeze I fell about 3 cords of wood. I called many people but most were too lazy to pull the wood out next to the street by hand. This is a development in Puyallup.
Anyway, I had three strangers who showed up and worked their tails off grabbing the firewood in 3 - 6 foot lengths so that they could cut it up and not have a saw running on the development property. All they had to do was pick it up and load it in the truck.
BTW, I will be doing it again in the spring.
I have three 2 to 3 foot diameter dead ceder trees that I am going to fall. The rest are alder trees. If anyone is interested

The local USFS ranger stattion is a good place to start. Alot of time in the spring when the roads open up you can go to them and get a permit to cut the trees laying in the road. So in that case you would contact the North Bend Ranger Dist and see if they have permits. If they did any logging they will open up permits in the clear cuts. Also Longview Fibre, or if you have a Hancock tree farm Pass you can get wood there.

You can really score with the right contractor. Last fall a contractor was building a house down the street from me. When they cleared the lot there were about 6 14' dump trailers full of logs that weren't nice enough to sell for anything but pulp. The contractor loaded my dump trailer with his excavator and was happy to just get rid of the wood. I got a couple years worth of wood in about an hour and for free. Can't beat that!

Forest Service started selling wood cutting permits on May 1st which comes with a map of the open cutting areas, restrictions, and required equipment. I need to get mine, already have a few truckloads scouted out.

Or just buy some from me! J/k...but I am sitting on nine cords of year old plus dry fir for sale if anyone is close by. Btw I used to buy permits from fs, for ten dollars a cord. Can cut from top of slope to toe of slope on a road.

Hey Scott, it is a bit of a drive but you mentioned Ellensburg works, I have 40 acres above Ellensburg with a bunch of downed and dead standing pine that fell victim to pine beetles. Shoot me a PM and maybe I can get some of this wood off my place and you can fill your wood shed.

I like to stay a year ahead, got my 5 cords put up last fall for this next winter so now I am working on 2015-16 wood... :tup:

Forest Service rules vary by district. Contact the ranger station where you plan to go.
