I've only hunted turkeys for a few years now & the first couple were tough & its still tough, find where they roost & set up near there in morning, be prepared to sit for hours.
-
It is some of the most enjoyable hunting there is. Go to a seminar in the area you live and start spending some time in the woods where turkeys live to learn what they do and when they do it.
-
Youth season opens on the 8th.

What area do you live in ? :dunno:
I'm doing a 2 hr turkey hunting seminar for Cabelas-Tulalip on Sat Feb 22nd from 1pm - 3pm.
If you can't make it, my three basic rules are:
(1) don't let them see you,
(2) don't let them see you,
and .... wait for it ....
(3) don't let them see you.

Agreed with take a seminar. Learn to call. Practice, practice and practice.spend time in the woods and listen to the birds. Spring turkey is all about calling. If Turkey hunting was about the ambush, I would give it up. Once you figure it out it gets easy well easier. I have more fun calling for others than getting my own birds. Bought a camera this year to film some turkey hunts. By far my favorite hunt of the year.

i might have to drop a leave chit for this opening day!

That is a Tuesday on my calendar, are you sure it isn't the 5th and 6th?

No worries, I hadn't seen anything official and was just assuming it was the 5th for youth. I have since seen on another thread the 5th. Can't wait, I think I may have both of my daughters hunting this year.

I've attached the flyer Katie Sanford (the store event coordinator) sent me ... click on the pdf file below.
She had told me Saturday Feb 22nd in the Conference Center ... it's free but she asked for pre-regristation by calling 360-474-4880 ( I think it's so they have enough chairs setup) ... that's also as the flyer shows.
