Title: Yote callin question?
Post by: Elkpiss on January 15, 2014, 10:49:33 AM
not a big yote hunter but i am in a yote tourny and want to win this thing.... Call box or Manual Predetor calls? and how long on average would let your call box play for? and how long do you normally sit on a set up?      and is night more successful then day time?    Any other tips for guy who isnt no pro in yote hunting would be appriciated.

The only yote i have ever called in i kissed him in, and it actually worked... lol

It's called experience.

Picking a stand and deciding how you are going to work it comes from experience.  Open country with a good place to hide a mouth call can do better than an e-call, open country with very little to hide your position an e-call/remote e-call can save the day.  Close cover, short range, remote e-call for me every time.

How long to call, call until you think that all chance of a dog coming in is past,  if hunting in a competition you should pretty much know every stand your going to make and how much time your going to spend at it before moving to the next.

More than once I've walked back to a stand from the truck to retrieve my glasses and have found coyotes standing right where the caller had been set.

I don't night hunt but it is very effective if you know what your doing.  Where I grew up hunting with a light was illegal so my only experience was hunting at night was on snow with a bright moon.

Tip 1

Read as much as you can about predator hunting, books like "The Complete Predator Hunter", "The Coyote Hunter", "Coyote Hunting East and West".  I'm not much of a video person but there are some decent one that do teach instead of entertain.  Tony Tabbe's Predator University Videos are good.

Trip 2
Hunt, Hunt, Hunt.  Glean all the information you can from each stand, don't repeat mistakes.
Join your local predator hunting club, get involved and meet some of the guys that do this a lot and listen and if your a decent guy that won't hunt spots others have taken you to you might get invited on a hunt..

Tip 3
If the above sounds like to much like work and instant gratification is your goal, pay someone to show you how it is done.  Guided trips, also there are predator hunting classes around the country.

If your hunting in a competition I have 5-10 times that many stands available as you never know how the wind will blow that day,  who's going to be parked in in your spot.  Even with 6 stands and you get a dog on every stand I doubt you'll even be in contention for honorable mention.   I'd spend the next couple of weeks finding a lot more stands that will work in different wind conditions.  Even on a day of cold calling I have more stands than that picked out on maps to try.

:) :) AWS is correct you need 15-20 per day, you can only hit each one about once every 10 days or 2 weeks.

Yep, that's what I'm saying.  I'm hunting in a tourney this weekend, I'm pushing 70 and my 24hr running and gunning days are long gone.  I'm partnered with a guy that feels the same as I do and it is going to be a fun hunt for us to support the club and the sport.  If we get a few dogs we'll be pleased.  We have little expectation of even coming close to winning.  Even at that we are both leaving early for the hunt to get a day of scouting in before hunting.
