Title: Lopez Island Sea Ducks?
Post by: GrampasGuns on January 19, 2014, 02:23:06 PM
Im gonna be travelling to Lopez for a weekend with some friends and was wondering if I should be bringing along a 12 gauge? Ive got a kayak, deeks and some boat camo. Is there any chance of me bagging some sea ducks? I am a puddler hunter and just want to give it a go being the last weekend of the season. Any advice would be awesome

Yes you should be able to try. Scout the bays. I know I've seen lots on the inside of the island while fishing the area.

Run a straight line of decoys, it will bring in scoters, and scaup

Scaup?   :chuckle:  I've noticed very few Scaup out here.

Lots of birds near Spencer Spit S.P., especially on the south side.  There should be scoters and maybe a few Oldsquaw.  Might see some Common Mergansers but they are more skittish than the others.  Some places you might be able to paddle up to and drift into geese if it is breezy and they are out there.  Odlin Park on the NW side might also be a place to check as it is pretty flat out there but I haven't been there to see birds.
