Since Aaron's death I have been trying to deal with the guilt I feel for not doing enough to earn earn the freedoms that I hold so dear, that others sacrifice to give me. I needed to do more to support our warriors and their families but how? I am not a rich man, with piles of money to donate to organizations that support our veterans. So what I needed to do was earn it and raise it with my time. One of the ideas I came up with was a 5K fun run/walk. I have done many of these in the past and this last summer a group of us did a Fallen heroes run in Portland. It was ok but they did a poor job of P.R. and there wasn't more than about 100 people. I think I can do better.
So here is what I have come up with: The run is gonna take place in our home town of Selah. Route is planned out. High School stage tech has volunteered their time and use of P.A. system. National Guard is gonna roll in some humvee's and equipment for the kids to climb around on. My company has donated banners and bottled water. Still need to line out some food items for after the race. Also we are gonna sell raffle tickets and hopefully get some kick butt prizes to raffle off. $1 raffle tickets or go more? Local businesses are already stepping up with donations. I was thinking $30 gets you in the run and a shirt. If I can keep the shirts under $10 that is $20 bucks a head that will go straight to the USO and the Fisher House.
I have someone lined up to put the website together but I am stuck on what design to put on the shirt and the website. Any input from you runners out there or guys and gals who have done their own 5K's would be greatly appreciated. I want to make this a really fun event to honor our fallen warriors and ones currently serving. I want people to look forward to doing it again. I would like this to be an annual event! There isn't a ton of races in our neck of the woods and with the message and the cause behind it combined with home town support I hope it will be a success! Thank you in advance for any input you all may have and lets see some logo ideas!!!! -Karl

I really suck at PR, but I would think some coorperate sponsors would be easy to net, such as either one of the two hospitals. Some local businesses, like BHUC. To what extent, IDK, even if its advertising??? I have a feeling Selah will respond better than Portland. ;)
-
Also it will be June 21st at noon. Put it on the calendar and I expect to see at least 10k huntwa members there! :chuckle:
-
this sounds like a great idea and would love to try and assist in anyway i can.

Agreed. My company (Pepsi) has already told me that I can have whatever I need so there is one! Gonna start pounding on doors heavy as soon as the website is up and running!

I would make the 4 + hour drive for this. Count me in.

Other ideas bouncing in my head.....permit? coordination with Selah PD or civic, Include police and Fire along with Fallen heroes, get their involvement on the field, (roll in trucks for kids, ladder trucks with hose etc.) I know you have the date, make sure you aren't bouncing heads with anything else big in the valley such as Yakatack, Midsummer classic, Selah days, Canyon marathon, that sort of thing. Is the run club still going in Yakima. Might be big to get their backing

Yep your tracking on the same line as me Doug. We contacted the city you can go through them and they will put it on their website and their insurance but they want a pretty good chunk of change out of every head registered so we told them thanks but no thanks. We can purchase event insurance for $300-$400 that will cover us and no permit needed from the city. I have had several Selah PD and YPD contact me personally to offer their services for the event day, which as far as my google searches go does not clash with anything else around the valley or really the state. Yakima Hard Core Runners is still around and we have contacted them but they have not been to proactive in helping as of yet but we are on their event calendar I believe.

I'm in too...keep us in the loop.

I'll keep brainstormin, sounds like you are well on your way.
Tshirt design......camo? emblem.....any graphic design gurus on here willing to hook up with BLR to brainstorm an emblem. Smossys girl has talent, backwoods boy, though I haven't seen him as of late.
What are your thoughts of what you want included? Do you want to include Fire and PD, Do you want local connection as this is annual in Selah. Do you want northwest flavor with elk and your brother? What is the best way to represent fallen heroes? Flag?
-
when i was in the army 11B (light) 9th INF /2/9 MANCHUS, we use to do a sound to narrows run, we did it as a batalion so that equals alot of troops, we did it formation to cadence, with guidons and everything, it was very impressive to the civilian folks and of course the kids on the sides of the roads, i dont know who you would contact at ft lewis, but i do know there is someone to contact and tell them what your doing who its for and everything, alot of times they will send a company or more to participate in stuff like this, it is a very HONORABLE deal your putting on for your BRO, very awesome indeed and for a GREAT CAUSE

Anyone and everyone who wants to be involved is more than welcome! I was thinking back to Aaron's funeral and how Yakima fire department had the giant flag between the ladder trucks and thought that that would be a cool thing to do. They are definitely on my contact list. The problem with the shirts is trying to keep the cost down. The less money I spend on stuff the more money goes to the cause. Color T's cost more money than white T's so I will have to go with white cotton and probably one screen print on the front as they charge by print. I will take some pics of the shirt I got for the run in Portland and also the shirts that I designed and purchased for "Team Aaron" that ran with me in Portland.

I will be contacting Ft. Lewis and making contacts here locally at YTC as soon as the website is up and running. I want people to be able to google it so they know its legit and not just some guy trying to beg for stuff :chuckle:
-
I am going to tell a friend of mine that does a bunch of charity fundraising.....will tell her how to connect if nothing else she may drum up some more support and entries.....
-
This is the shirt we got in portland
-
This is the shirt I designed. Its poly pro in desert tan. With the flag, front logo, and back they were $18 bucks. I think for cotton they were $14.
-
I want in. Lets get some car pooling going
-
Since it isn't just about Aaron but about all our warriors, fallen and still standing, I don't want to add the elk or hunting into it but just make it more generic. I was thinking though that we could do a special run of T's for Huntwa members in camo or something like that. Add the elk head or something custom.
-
Sounds like a real good idea. Convoy time!

I like the poly shirts.

Can we just buy shirts if we know we won't make the run?
-
Can we just buy shirts if we know we won't make the run?
We can work something out  Not gonna say no to money :chuckle:
The USO is currently saving money to rebuild the USO hub at Seatac. The one they currently have is outside the terminal so in order for our military to use it they must go in and out of security and we all know what a pain in the behind that is. The new one will be inside the terminal and much more easily accessed by our men and women in uniform! All money raised will go to a very good cause! We will split it evenly between USO and Fisher House.
-
Put me down for two 2X cotton shirts and tell me where to send money. No pay pal for me.

Sounds good! shoot me a pm with your mailing address so I don't forget or lose this in the shuffle. Shirts are a ways out so I don't want to drop the ball on ya! Thank you! Once again the huntwa community is stepping up to the plate and knocking it out of the park!

Sent. Thank you

With the shirt design.. you said one sided screen print, black/gray, no color? Cost is a factor. I've kinda been playing with a design but no idea if I'm going in the right direction. I'm not real good with this area of design and I'm sure you'll get tons of offers to make something up for you. I'll post up my work in progress and you can let me know if this is something you're interested in before I spend too much time dinking around with it. :dunno:

Just kinda a work in progress, flag is unfinished etc.. this is what I have so far as an idea.

I just stopped in and talked to my shirt guy and he said for a white cotton tee with a single design on the front would be no problem to stay under $10 even with a color design. He said give him ideas and he can put it together so either post up a good pic or just describe something. The standard is the M4, boots and helmet but it gets used a lot. It could be incorporated into a design though. All ideas are welcome!
-
That's pretty awesome!!!!!!!!
-
The standard is the M4, boots and helmet but it gets used a lot.
Yes it is everywhere and it's a good tribute. I kind of went a different direction just as maybe a different thought. Like I said, this isn't my forte but I wanted to try something.
-

Oh you like it? I can try to finish it up.. probably next few days. The flag part is pretty time consuming and I'm sorta OCD about making things look right to me. So little tweaks here and there end up taking a while :chuckle:

. I agree it is a very moving image but one thing I didn't like about the run in Portland was how somber it was. I want this to be upbeat, positive, and fun! There are so many images that come to mind but I don't want to clutter the image.

I really like the idea of a special T for huntwa members in Camo as well.

This is a lapel pin that each direct family member is given. Maybe incorporate the gold star in somewhere? Maybe the two large stars on either side of the 5k?

Oh ya that'd work great, I'll add that in tomorrow and work on it some more. I have to do it on work breaks/after work because I don't have the software at home.
-
I will bring at least five of us, and I will try for more I would like the poly shirts myself when we get everything finalized I will paypal our fees. Also the wife says when you get it on facebook we will start spreading the word.
-
Thank you so much! There is no huge hurry on this part as we won't be ordering the shirts until a few weeks out from the race, so don't kill yourself trying to hammer this out. I have no idea how difficult this is to put together but if its not too much work maybe do one up in color like you have it and then do one without the star swoosh thing on the right but a bit bigger flag. Thank you so much for the help!
-
MLB I may be down to do this as well. Will talk with a few buddies of mine too. See if we can make it a full car load for the trip! Awesome work BLR
-
We will be there. Great idea thank you guys for all your work. I'll pass the info on to more people. Thanks
-
Count me in! Like was said earlier, as soon as you can start up a facebook page and lets start passing it around. Easy way to reach alot of people.
-
I will be there, would be nice if all hunt wa memebers that can make it,could help out and meet before the march..anything I can do let me know, two xlrg shirts for me
-
Maybe incorporate the line "All gave some, some gave all" :dunno:
-
The wife and i would love to run it this 5K. We need to keep it updaying on here some how so people wont forget. I will put a reminder till the web site is done. It would be awesome.
-
I love the poly shirt  I have a stack of cotton shirts I never wear. I would wear the one that BLR designed all the time. I love it. Something I could even wear hunting. It would mean a lot to take him hunting.
June 21st ---I will be there.
-
Color added, gold star lapel pin added, flag enlarged (still unfinished though).
Version 1 - Stars etc. removed.
Version 2 - With stars etc. The reason I made it was trying to be symbolic of a circle, stars growing larger from the flag that was fading into white. Trying to represent how memories never fade so even though loved ones are lost, they are not forgotten. Going towards the footprint because we are now running a 5k in their memory.
Versions 3 and 4 - Hunt-WA prospective versions! On the bottom it has "Heroes Live Forever 'colockumelk' Cpt. Aaron R. Blanchard".
:dunno: Finished for today, let me know what to attempt next or if I'm way off the ball on this.
-
I cannot describe to you how freaking awesome those are!!!!!!!!! I am gonna run these by my mother who is co planner on this deal and I will get back to you you. I love the shirt for the huntwa folks too! Probably have to put it up for a vote a little later down the road as to which one the huntwa family likes the best! Thank you so much!!!!!!
-
SG,
I have to Echo the above statement of "those are freaking awesome". I like the 2 with more color and love the elk antlers. Nice work!!!!!!!
-
Never a doubt that I'm in and will work on funding and participation.
Wife and oldest will run. Fat man will walk/trot.
-
Long term? I'm thinking HW cookoff contest at the same time with proceeds going to the same thing? Just a thought since that ideas been tosed around already. :dunno:
-
Keep me posted solo lets do it

Make it a camp out weekend somewhere close and Hunt-WA BBQ Summer Fest.....
Smossy's Girl..... I love the design but I think the boot track is better in black. I know the mud idea but that brown is off to me. I loved your initial design in Black. I'd say just color the Flag and maybe the pins.......
And I'd make the pins about 2/3 smaller. They are there and folks that know what they are will appreciate and tell the tale but take away from your leading on the text.
My .02 cents worth about .0002
-
BLRMAN, i am sure you have thought of this but incase you havent, when the event is a couple weeks out, email the MENS ROOM 99.9, they really like doing stuff for the wounded warriors and pretty much anything to do with service men and women, it would be another way to get the event out there  maybe even email them sooner, maybe they would do a broadcast from it, they have done stuff like this in the past...

they are on my p.r. list. I am gonna start beating the war drums about middle of April and then hit it really hard end of May all through June. They interviewed my dad when he did his ride. I'm not holding out hope for many wet siders as there are 7-8 races that day on that side, but hey, you never know. Even if it hooks a few that is better than zero.
-
Dang, I will be at a half marathon in Seattle that weekend that my GF is running in.

Thank you, and you are most certainly welcome. Okay let me know what she says and any ideas that come to mind. I definitely welcome/want other members' ideas and thoughts as well, but I will be going by your final word :). If someone posts up an idea you want to try just say the word. The only reason is because I know how fast hundreds of opinions can change the entire thing, and I don't want to chase down every idea unless you agree, this is your project.

I agree with that, made them smaller, I'll post up versions later :) .
I did like the faded black boot print but when it changed from being black and white only - to having color - I tried to make it brown for a muddy effect lol. It's simple enough to change back and forth so it'll be up to the main man.
-
I like the smaller stars idea and my mom and a few other folks like the less busy #1 version. I kind of like the added color of the brown but if its not too much trouble let's see if it pops more in black. This is def the design we are running (haha) with!

Shirts are looking awesome

5k runs are the "in" thing now... Foam runs, color runs, black light night runs, "run from the cops" runs, zombie runs, there are so so so many. I started doing them a couple years ago :chuckle: I know. It might be a "wetsider" thing.. but from April through December there is probably a 5k run every weekend, so I wouldn't worry too much about overlap. Definitely get the word out as much as possible, post a link to the facebook page on here when it's in full effect so we can all share on our pages. That's definitely the way most of them are found.
I'd figure out how to post it up on this site too: http://gametiime.com/ (http://gametiime.com/) I look at it a lot for 5k runs.
-
What if you go for image #1 and have 'Heroes live forever' with your brothers name on the left sleave? Does that change the cost much?
-
What if you go for image #1 and have 'Heroes live forever' with your brothers name on the left sleave? Does that change the cost much?
It does. every image is an additional cost. It might be only a couple bucks but multiply that by hopefully hundreds of shirts and thats a big chunk of change that wouldn't be going to the charities. Also, as personal as this is for me because of my brother, its not about just him. Its about honoring all of our fallen warriors, their families, and our warriors still fighting. I wouldn't want to personalize it like that. I think it should most def be on the huntwa shirt if we are wanting to pursue that route with the elk antler shirt. I think its a cool idea personally. That way we know who to avoid at the run/walk :chuckle:
-
Roger that.

So I am firing up the Facebook page and not sure what to title it. Yakima Run to Remember or Yakima Run To Remember: Fallen Heroes 5K Suggestions or opinions?

I like fallen heroes 5k.

June 21st works great for me. I'll try for sure to make it. Good incentive to hit the running trails and burn off some of this post Christmas weight Ive gained.
-
Nice work!! I still want a camo one as well.
-
Modified:
-
I really like the design!! We really should pursue the huntwa one as well. I am not fond of camo for everyday wear, but would have no problem paying extra (so as to not take money away from charity) for the poly shirt. I am in and will start spreading word to friends and co-workers.
Sent from your honeyhole!!
-
Nice design SG, you're very talented. Do you think you could stylize a HUNT WA into the design by incorporating it into the center of the boot print? You know a HUNT WA tread.
-
SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! :IBCOOL:
-
Thanks guys! I'm just happy to have the opportunity to help :)
washelkhunter - Yea that sounds cool actually, I'll give it a shot.
-
Not sure if you're thought of/tried this but most Crossfit gyms do a lot to support military fundraisers. If there's one in your area I'm sure they'd be more than willing to post details for their members.
I know there are a lot of military/leo's at my gym that would be interested so as soon as you get the Facebook page up and running I'll share the link
-
-
Hey you worked that nicely into the tread! The antlers are making it too busy IMO tho. Nice work SG!
-
Hey you worked that nicely into the tread! The antlers are making it too busy IMO tho. Nice work SG!
Yeah I'm not sure on them either now... On page 2, they seemed to look okay but I don't know if it's because the tread change or color change but :dunno: hmmmmmmm.... I am not sure how to incorporate something hunting themed in such a red/white/blue patriotic look.
-
Hunt wa pretty much covers the community theme. Awesome job girl!
I would sign-off on that!
-
Hunt wa pretty much covers the community theme. Awesome job girl!
That's true, awe thank you! We'll see what the final word is :)
-
OK, so here is what I am thinking for the huntwa shirts. Smossy's Girl can put together however many different designs she feels like doing. We can post them in a different thread with a poll so people can vote on their favorite. After we decide which shirt it will be, it will be the job of the runner/walker/who ever wants to give me money for a shirt :chuckle: to message me with your full name after they register so I can mark their registration paper as a huntwa member so I know how many huntwa shirts i need to make.
This is totally gonna be SG's call on this one! She has already contributed a bunch of her time for the run shirt and I don't expect her to commit anymore than she already has. The huntwa shirt is now her baby. Once she hashes out which design, she can hand it over to me and I will take it from there! Thanks again everyone and especially Smossy's Girl! You rock!

BUMP

Any new progress on this?

S/G your gifted chick, awesome job, that looks super cool

Any new progress on this?
:yeah:
-
is there a web. site or anything yet.
-
Sorry guys for not updating this. I have been in full on remodel mode on my house! Walls are gone, electrical, flooring, that kind of stuff. Website is www.yakimaruntoremember.org (http://www.yakimaruntoremember.org) Its not fully operational yet but I am at the mercy of my web designer! You would think for the money I am paying her (free) she would have it working by now. She is using her full time mother of 4 girls under 6 as an excuse :chuckle: she assures me we will be taking registrations by Monday so we will see!
-
That sounds great, I have been training for this run. Can't wait to do my part and get me one of the sweet shirts! Great job everone who is working hard on this.
-
Sweet, looks like it's all coming together! :)
-
Website is functional and taking registrations!!!! :IBCOOL: still needs some filling in but its "running" :chuckle: remember to shoot me a pm with your full name so I can mark your registration as a huntwa member.

Have six people coming with me to run for this great cause
Do you have any recommendations for places to stay Saturday night?
-
Great looking shirt. Can a person just buy the shirt, I can't make the run?
-
ttt
-
Sorry for the delayed response guys. To answer some of your questions, yes you can buy just a shirt. I will not turn away money for this cause! If you can't make the run I will just have you pm me your shirt size, name and address, and we will figure out payment via paypal or mail. Cost will be $20.
As far as a place to stay goes, I would recommend the North Park Lodge in Selah. Very family friendly, pool, and they have some taxidermy work hanging all over what could be better. If not there, then the Ledgestone, or the Fairfield Inn are also nice hotels. Best Western Lincoln Inn is also a nice hotel. Pm me if you are booking something other than those as there are some places in the heart of town that aren't so nice.
Been hitting the sponsors pretty hard and have raked in a couple grand worth so far. Posters should be ready for pickup by the end of the week hopefully and ready for distribution. Next task will be to start piling up raffle donations!
Thank you all for continueing to show interest in our pursuit to help repay the freedoms we all enjoy! -Karl
-
It is getting close! Get signed up
-
I will be there I will sign up this weekend are there hunt WA shirts
-
Yes there will be huntwa shirts. You just need to send me your full name so I can pull your registration and make sure I have that size made in the different design. Thank you all very much for the continued support! Never Forget!
-
I want in. Lets get some car pooling going
i will be coming from the enumclaw buckley area if anyone needs a ride we will have 3 seats availible
-
Just an update. I have received everyone's messages about registrations and I have pulled and marked names for huntwa shirts. I am currently in Montana on Vacation with my family and little brother but when I get home Sunday I will be meeting with my shirt guy to start getting some printed. Smossy's girl sent him the final logo's so when I get my hands on a shirt I will post up a pic. I am excited to see them in print! If you want a shirt by run day you need to register by next Thursday. Thanks everyone!

I just signed up. Cant wait going to be great. Is there more hunt wa shirts? I ordered a shirt but would like the hunt wa one?

OK, so here is the low down on the huntwa shirts. My shirt guy is flat out slammed! He had my run, Yakima little league all stars, and selah little league all to get done by Friday. He just flat out had no time to set up for a seperate run of shirts. So here is what I am gonna do, next week when he is freed up he is gonna run the huntwa shirts. I will then mail them to you. So you will be getting a normal shirt on race day and then a huntwa shirt in the mail. 2 for one deal! I'm sorry I couldn't get this done on time but it is what it is. -karl

I can't wait to meet some of you on race day! Hope everything goes smooth! Is there an emoticon for "sweating it"? Lol

Perfect. How would i go about getting you money for a hunt wa shirt. i will be there Saturday around 11. I am already registered. Also how long should it take to drive from elk Heights to the School.?

I will be covering the huntwa shorts for the folks showing up to run. I said you guys would get huntwa shirts for running and I'm not about to go back on my word and make you pay again. Elk heights to the school is about 50min depending on traffic of course. Jstone, send me your name so I can ear mark your registration as a huntwa member.

Blrman great to meet you
You too my friend! It was an amazing day! We had over 150 runners/walkers, weather was perfect, and everything ran amazingly smooth! It was great to meet some more huntwa members and as always, they were great people!
I counted cash from from yesterday which consisted of raffle ticket sales, same day registrations, and donations and the grand total was $2,362! Add that to the $2,400 in online registrations and the $2100 in Sponsor dollars and mail in registrations and it looks like we are going to be able to cut the USONW a check for over $6,000 dollars! Mission accomplished gentlemen! I'm still on cloud nine!
