Post by: ducks55 on November 14, 2008, 06:19:23 PM
So im looking to buy a coyote gun, something other than my 308 and 10/22. What would be a good gun for under $300?

stevens or the new marlin xl7. they are right at $300. marlin has an accutrigger of sorts.

i would jump on a marlin in 223 if i could find one.

For that price your probly going to have to go used. Weatherby is selling the vangaurds starting at $399 and you can probly find a howa with a hogue stock around that price. Or you might be able to pick up a stevens for less I dont know what they go for but the site said $346. :dunno: Any of the 22 cals work great for coyotes but the .223 is cheap to shot.

howa actullay has a new gun out I think its cqalled ranch land security rifle or something similar comes with a scope and all pretty cheap to. I had a howa lighting and it was maybe the most accurate gun Ive ever shot. JB

If your going to use the 308 try some nosler AB and as long as you dont hit a major bone it shouldnt leave a huge hole. :dunno:

I've thought about this same thing with my .308, what about a lighter grain bullet that was FMJ? Something like a 110 or 123 grain?

I got my Stevens .25-06  brand new for $299.  It shot under  1" @ 100 yards with factory loads and under 3/4" @ 100 yards with handloads.  Great guns for the money.  I have heard a lot of people that bought the Stevens in .223 be very content with their rifles also.  I have seen some pictures of groups that could be covered with a quarter from a guy on Predatormastersforums.  Might be something to look into.

FMJ arnt the greatest, they seem to just knock down the coyotes then they get up and run away. You would have to shot them in the head or spine to anchor them. I would get a non exposive bullet that will open up like the accubond, interbond, and ect. :twocents:

Would that honaday TAP ammo work?  From what I understand it is not supposed to even come out the other side, at least in a human they siad. Maybe a yote would be too thin and the pressure would blow him in half :chuckle: Once I get settled over in Colfax you and JDB are gonna have to maybe take a trip over for some yotes with me.

I want a Red Ryder Coyote Gun in .223 with a compass in the stock and a thing that tells time... oh, wait   :chuckle:

So can you or can't you use FMJ to hunt 'yotes?  Someone in another thread told me that FMJ was illegal even for 'yotes because it's still "hunting."

I got a Stevens in .223 to use as a base for a project gun. I liked it so much I'm keeping it as-is except maybe with a nicer stock. A great deal for the money.
