Title: Upland scatter guns and other tools of the trade
Post by: merkelman on January 25, 2014, 05:12:08 PM: Ok so we have been posting our keep from the season. How about the tools of the trade. Guns, vests, dogs, etc!

Our group of guys does the same after a long days hunt. Good call. Next year you should join us!

Post by: joe_dumy on January 28, 2014, 04:35:15 AM: My two kids have been my favorite hunting neccesity this year. We flushed some grouse and I missed of coarse. My son said "Daddy I think you need to practice more" after reflecting on the day while eating diner. Been a fun year for me. Not a lot for the freezer but plenty of memories.

I mainly take my Marlin 90 16ga for long walks while looking for birds, shells, rocks, sheds and what ever else I can find to prove to my wife that I actually went hunting because even if I get a shot I rarely hit anything.

I hope to add a hunting dog to my hunting arsenal next season. We will see.

Naches I love the 31s, ball bearing shell shukers, there is not a smoother pump in existence. I own a 16ga. Been looking for a 31L in 16ga for a while as my chukar gun.

Good whiskey sounds good anytime and after chukar hunting there is no better excuse.

BTW, nice shotgun; I too love the 16 ga. I own three; including a Remington 31L.

Post by: AWS on January 28, 2014, 08:38:21 AM: As far as I know it is a melanistic (black phase) pheasant. I shot it in MT a long way from any house or farm yard so I'm pretty sure it was a wild bird not and escapie.

Love the Model 90, it is on my short list of gotta have 16ga shotguns.

Get a little nervous about cougars here and there. But I cant go without them without a big fit now. And my son is convinced he take at least one of them out with his red rider. So we stay close and are pretty noisy.

T-Bone if you every want to get rid of that 31L 16 ga please consider me.

Bracer I feel like we need to make up for that trip someday to your dog. 16 shot and two quail. He deserves better. I had a rock in my shoe and it was throwing me off. Not sure what your problem was.

My turkey gun, a super-full choked Spanish double without any makers mark, proofed in 1929. This bird was a real limb hanger and was amazingly tender/juicy.

They can be dead tired or hurting at the end of the day and they hit bird scent on the way back to the truck and they are just as wound up as the first bird of the day.

My old Trooper has artheritic hips but can't be left home, you'd never know it to see him in the field, he is " balls to the wall" the whole time and in the evening I have to lift him on to the couch and he cries everything he tries to move but don't try and leave him home. I'm doing more duck hunting this year and in the future as the impact isn't quite as bad.

That sucks about your setter. Nice looking dog. Mine will be five this year, and I feel like I hit the doggy jackpot. Just a wonderful dog in every way. Hope you can get another one at some point.

Those are some beautiful guns there fethrduster. Glad to see them getting used and in the field where they should be instead of locked in a cabinet. If they could only talk....

Nope, just a regular male valley quail. I agree, they sure are beautiful little birds.

Thanks! I can't afford closet queens, and life is too short anyway, so I use them as much as I can. They do talk. They talk to me a lot. They say, "Hey you! Take me out, take me out!!" :tung:
