Atleast it wasn't made in China! It's a keeper! String it on your landyard

Could be because migratory birds from Asia end up in Alaska. That's why there is concern a bird from Asia will carry the bird flu up into Alaska and spread it to the birds that migrate south into North America. The biggest surprise would be why doesn't the US Fish and Wildlife have Japan bird banding info since we have a treaty with them and other countries?
-
Very cool!
I have heard of Pintails with Japanese bands before- must have been your lucky day!

I've heard of a few pintails with bands from japan as well. Definitely a rare kill congrats!!!

Pianoman,
The Japanese government has been banding birds since 1924, and the environmental agency (equivalent to our EPA, but toothless) is currently in charge. They publish an annual report on banding, which can be found here (much of it in English):
http://www.biodic.go.jp/banding/pdf/banding_h24.pdf (http://www.biodic.go.jp/banding/pdf/banding_h24.pdf)
There is an interesting chart (V-3-1), which shows the longevity records for banded/captured birds--the record is for a Storm Petrel, which was captured 30 years after banding.
The agency's website has an interesting page devoted to tracking Pintails:
http://www.env.go.jp/nature/dobutsu/bird_flu/migratory/dabbler.html (http://www.env.go.jp/nature/dobutsu/bird_flu/migratory/dabbler.html)
Look at the Google map results for migrating Pintails from the Saitama release site, the blue map, Slide 2.
You can see the majority of Pintails migrate to the summertime breeding grounds in far eastern Siberia (Russia), including Kamchatka. The tracking records do not show Pintails moving to the Alaskan mainland. Yet the bird in question here clearly made its way clockwise up to Alaska, spent the summer there, and upon returning to the warmer wintering grounds made a left turn when he should have turned right, and came down the eastern Pacific coastline to Washington. Talk about making a wrong turn!
Good on you MC37493 for sharing this data with the agency!
-
Thanks pd. That's certainly a once-in-a-lifetime band. Awesome.

Does anyone know if they hunt ducks in Japan?
-

Does anyone know if they hunt ducks in Japan?
Absolutely yes. Here is an example: http://hunting.seesaa.net/article/114509522.html (http://hunting.seesaa.net/article/114509522.html)
Japan has a real problem with hunting right now. The (national) government has spent the entire post-war period restricting the ownership of firearms (handguns are absolutely prohibited, and rifles are very difficult to possess), the result of which the average age of licensed hunters in now above 70! If I remember correctly, to even apply for a permit to own a rifle one must have hunted safely with a shotgun for at least 10 years--this is really a high hurdle, and most hunters don't even try to apply for the permit (I don't know a single person who owns a rifle there).
The country is literally overrun with deer, and there are very few hunters who have the means (guns) and knowledge to take them.
As a rule, hunting in Japan is limited to shotguns (buckshot for deer or bear). Small game (including pheasants, ducks) is possible, but not nearly as common as it was a few generations ago. I know this from personal experience.
But the good news is hunting is making a comeback in Japan.

This is Way Cool, Thanks For sharing. I remember reading an article in DU magazine about the same thing many years ago.
