Title: Best recipes for cougar?
Post by: Blsum on January 27, 2014, 09:51:47 PM
Ok guys I was lucky enough to shoot a cougar last weekend and I've heard that it makes some excellent table fare. So how would you recommend I cook it?

It's good eats but remember it should come with a warning label, It put a friend of mines wife in the hospital after eating some. People don't think being allergic to cats means not to eat them. Great eating though, just make sure everyone is not allergic.

I have had it in jerkey and fried. The fired stuff was just like a pork chop. Breaded and fried to golden brown. Just make sure you get it well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cats are know to carry trichinosis just like pork and you can die from it. Just like raw or under cooked pork.

It has been 20 years since my wife (she was my girlfriend at the time) shot one.  She cooked it as a stir fry, soy sauce, green peppers, mushrooms and cougar meat over white rice.  Delicious.

Enjoy,

Good to know carp I had no idea. I was just figuring I would cook it like I do my deer and elk back straps. Wrapped in bacon and cooked to med rare.

figured people were allergic to the dander.  my girl will get allergic reaction if a dog licks her face, boy can't be around cats..

Bears can carry it too.  Jerky not the best idea does not get hot enough to kill it before it is to dry to eat.

We actually cut ours into normal steaks and cooked it like a pork chop. It is very similar in texture and flavor. Some great tasting meat

Yep. We hammer the boneless fillets flat.. Egg bath, flour and salt and pepper then fire in a little oil. Very good..

Congrats on the cougar, some of the best eating there is IMO.

The backstrap, as mentioned , is good cooked the way you would any kind of pork.  The legs, I just ground for burger, but there are probably some rump cuts that would steak out decently.

It was labeled "Fluffy Burger" in the freezer.   :chuckle:

BTW, I am allergic to cats but had no issues with eating the cougar.   :dunno:
