Title: Turkey Chokes?
Post by: super186 on January 29, 2014, 12:55:09 PM
Any ideas for chokes? I have a Benelli Vinci and a Winchester SX2, both 12 GA 28" barrels that I would like to get turkey chokes for. They both came with full chokes but I'd like to hear what other people have had success with for these two guns in particular. I will try different loads and do some patterning before the season but I'd like to avoid spending $100 plus per gun buying different chokes. I'm sure I could sell all the ones that don't work back to you guys for a smoking deal but I'd like to avoid that if possible. :chuckle:

Tell me if you have a choke that has been significantly better than another. Thanks.

Indian Creek Chokes

There used to be a day when comp-n-choke, kicks and rhino were the top chokes but I think Indian Creek is the best choke currently out there.  :twocents:

I'm happy with my comp-n-choke but I can't shoot heavy shot out of it. Once I use up my federal premium #5's, I may think about switching.

:yeah:  good advise from JP ....

However, my Benelli and Mossberg have standard factory "extra full turkey" chokes just the way I got them.  Although I feel good to go at 45 yards, my longest shot ever was 35 yards and most harvests were at 20 yards or less.

Basically I like to bring them in close and get the full show for my money ...... have had them land on my boots, heads at my pockets looking around, almost walking on me, popping up on a dead fall and looking at me eyeball to eyeball, etc .... definitely worth the price of admission!  Needless to say I could have used grandpa's old blunder bust on almost all of them.

I use Kicks choke tubes. Seem to have good luck with them and figure why change if it works fine. But then again, I've never really played around with other chokes. Plus their website has a chart with recommendations on choke size / size shot and gun.

your best bet would probably be to search around on the net for what other people who have your shotgun like. Indian Creek will run you around $80, or so. I ended up going with a Primos Tight Wad only because the reviews were good with my gun (didn't hurt that it was only around $20, too).

I would have to think there would be an affordable option that can put a nice group out there for you at 40+ yards with the quality guns you have. I'd be interested to hear what you decided to go with and how the patterns turned out.

I use a Primos Jellyhead in my 870. But I am going to make a go of it with my SX3 this year and am looking as well beings they don't make the jellyhead for it.

My buddy has an SX3 and has gone through 2 or 3 chokes for it now and still isn't happy with the performance, he's tried different loads too.  Hope you have better luck.

In my turkey shotguns the SSX (tru-glo strut stopper extreme) has been very good.  It's usually the first turkey choke I buy because it's about half the price of some of the other chokes and very good in all brands of guns I've tested.

You could go to www.oldgobbler.com (http://www.oldgobbler.com)....they have some shotgun and choke forums where people contribute a lot of good advice...if you provide your shotgun models and preferred loads they can make some good recommedations.  Good luck!

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the info. I want to make sure I have chokes in hand and patterned before they are hard to come by.

This!  PureGold and Sumtoy are also good.

For a cheaper choke, lots of guys like jellyheads by primos
