Today my dad and I spent another day trying to fill our tags. We both have doe tags and have passed on many hoping to get lucky with a buck. I also have a multi season tag and I think I have hunted 90% of the days it has been open for rifle and bow. I have seen many deer but not the right opportunity. Passed on a two point during early archery and may be kicking myself by the time it is over. Today we drove into an area and saw a nice 3 pt on the side of the road. I start to jump out of the truck and my dad yells we are not legel yet. 8 minutes to go until legal shooting. Perfect broadside shot at about 50 yards. I wait and wait and the buck steps off the road into the thick junk. I try to find him but no luck. About a half an hour later a spike walks up from the exact spot the 3 pt went down. We hang around for awhile and then go on with the hunt for the day, put in a couple of good hikes, glass a few clear cuts, etc. We don't see anything else for the whole day until we start heading out. 7 minutes passed legal shooting I spot another 2 or 3 pt chasing a doe. I yell at my dad to stop the truck and I jump out. Again he yells we are not legal. 8 minutes off in the morning and 7 minutes off at night. Now for the kicker. On the way home a doe jumps out in front of us and we nail her with the truck. Shoves my dad's bumper back and breaks the splash guard. We call 911 so they can send out a warden and we wait for him. Just to rub it in, when he shows up he has an awesome, big, tall, wide 2 pt that he took from someone who poached it. Just another day in my unlucky season. I have had a spike and 2pt bull within 15 yards in a 3 pt or better unit, a 5 point bull walk to within 50 as it gets to dark to see the sights on my bow, had 3 cows within 20 and then another cow within 25 yards during rifle(bull) season for my wife. Last year I had someone shoot and drop a bull I already put a round into, that would have been my first bull. Oh well, go out and try again tomorrow.

Keep your heads high. Luck can change on a dime. All you can do is your best.

Good luck, and thank you for playing by the rules.

Sounds to me like you are doing everything right. The blacktail of course are very nocturnal except for when their in the rut which is now. And if you have the multiseason tag you can capitolize on the late archery hunt and have the aid of a good call and some horns to rattle with. Good luck and yes it will get better. Sounds like your in for a big un for all the patience you have and hopefully it guides you to a new state record.

thanks for the encouraging words guys. went out today for the final day of rifle season and didn't see a single deer. Fingers crossed for late archery. I would be up for trying some new areas if anyone is looking for someone to team up with.
