Title: .22LR ammo options
Post by: Band on February 05, 2014, 08:18:59 PM
I've never given much thought to .22 LR ammo options and am really only familiar with (solid) round nosed and hollow points.  My understanding is that hollow point will do more damage than solid bullets, but I'm wondering whether there are options available for maximum damage.  What can you tell me?

And yes, I realize .22 is a very small caliber and larger caliber swill do more damage. ;)

There is one that comes apart into three pieces, but I can't remember the name.  I've never had hollow points do massive amounts of damage, but maybe somewhat more than solids.

For a .22lr, I think the most important thing is to find the round that is the most accurate for your rifle.  :twocents:

I really like the Velocitor rounds. They wiegh 40 gns. which is huge for a .22lr

I also love the Segmented rounds by CCI. Just as fast as the stinger, but shatter into 3 pieces... as mentioned above.

Looks like CCI has some pretty good .22 ammo products.  I guess I need to pay closer attention to those once the store shelves start filling up again.

Either I've found it or my rifle (a standard Ruger carbine) just shoots very accurately.  I bought a new scope with a trajectory compensation system (BSA Sweet 22) and went beyond my standard 50 yard shot to 100 yards and I put 10 shots in a 2" grouping with a pretty poor bench rest setup.  I was using Remmington hollow points.  I need to improve my bench rest and give it another shot to see if I can improve on that.

By the way, big props to that BSA Sweet 22 scope.  Love that thing and it was pretty inexpensive to boot! :)

The CCI segmented ones are what we use at home for varmint control. I use the 1050 fps in mine with a suppressor and my son uses the 1640 fps. They work great!

I bought the same scope for my 10/22, haven't put it on yet.

22s really have no power, accuracy is everything.

Yeah, I too love my Sweet 22 BSA.
If it's accurate ammo or 100 yard ammo you're looking for... try the CCI Match grade.

Seriouly. CCI has been making the best ammo for .22lr for the longest time.
It's the only stuff I shoot... with the exception of super cheap bulk ammo.

Or and occational Aguila Super Colibri round... if I want to be really quite.

A 2" 10-shot group at 100yds is amazing for that setup. :yike:

Aguila makes a hypersonic round that is 30gr at 1750fps.
Hits harder than any other 22lr.
Come roundnose and HP.
