Hunted east of Colville Thursday through Sunday and struggled. Saw lots of sign in a few areas but saw very few deer and no bucks, did see some hanging in other camps however, maybe it was just us. Only shots I heard were in the first and last hour of daylight, nothing mid-day at all. Anyone hunting in the Little Pend Orielle area had better luck?
-
I hunted there yesterday morning. Didn't see anything. Heard a lot of shots in the morning. Saw 100+ turkey's and a coyote while driving.
-
Saw more moose sign than anything else in there! Very sparse in the deer sighting!
-
it's a tough year- the population is down.
-
I was hunting north of where you were but my experience was similar. I just got back from Northport area yesterday. Spent 8 days and huntin was tough. Crazy weather and full moon on clear nights made seeing deer during the day difficult. I saw 7 deer in 8 days. Three were bucks (2 spikes) but no good shot opportunity. The bucks I saw were between 10:00 and noon, but I had to sneak into their bedding areas to see them and it was way too thick in there. Got to within 20 yds but couldn't get a shot. With 9 hunters in my camp, when I left we had one hanging and it was the only deer that guy had seen in 7 days. A couple of other camps had 1 or 2 deer but nothing huge.
Of course, driving out on Sunday I saw a nice 3X3 40 yds off the Alladin road at about 8:10 - standing proud like he owned the place.
-
Were you guys on the Little Pend Orielle wildlife Refuge too?
I was there sat and sun and saw 3 deer the whole time :o. But one was a BIG BUCK. We were driving down the blacktail mt. cutoff road and i was looking a the map and my dad said deer. So i look up and just got the Binos up in time to see a tall heavy rack going into the thickest brush he could find. So we got out and searched for him the rest of the day in there to no avail. Then the next day we saw 2 does.
On sat morning we were in the Iron Mountains on fs road 9535 and we hiked a few miles heard a few shots, but I could not find a track or poop or any sign of a deer in there. On the way out we saw 2 does as well.
I thought it was wierd that all of the deer we saw were while we were in the truck driving. This was my first time doing the late hunt so i was pretty much just starting from scratch not knowing where to go. I hunted a lot in the burned areas in the refuge and found a few fresh tracks but nothing else. Where are all of the deer? :dunno:

My buddy and I got out of school (CWU!) on the first friday of the season and randomly decided to go head up that way cuz he still had a tag. We got stuck in Spokane traffic and didn't make an evening hunt. The next morning it was raining so hard we sat in the truck till 7. Then we braved the rain, set him up, and I made a push for him. A buck ran within 15 yards of him, missed it on the first shot but dumped it on the second. It is a 3pt plus eyegaurds, 20 7/8 inches wide, but not very tall. We only saw 4 deer, one just happened to be a buck. We were down by 49 degrees north though. The population there didn't seem to be much better?
-
Good for us.....Buddy got a nice buck.....we saw one other buck.....buddies uncle got a buck and I missed a big buck :bash: TWICE!! pretty damn sure the gun is off but that would be a total of 4 bucks so not to slow for us
-
We hunted around McDowell Lake. I've only hunted there once, last year during late archery, and it was fantastic, saw 20 to 30 deer every day and lots of bucks, so to go there this year and see next to nothing was shocking to say the least. It did seem to be spot sensitive though. The sign we saw was in one area and the camps that we saw with deer had multiple deer hanging. Oh well, thats hunting i suppose. A guy did shoot a dandy mule deer up there, we saw it in the back of the Game Wardens truck driving out, looked like a 5x6 with LOTS of mass.
-
Thanks for the news, even if bad. I'm headed up there (selkirks)for late muzzleloader next week. Hoping for different luck. Moon will be dark. Hoping for some snow. QUESTION....does it seem like they are at peak of rut yet?
Are you seeing new scrapes?

We drove by McDowell a few times. Its pretty thick in there :yike:. I was mostly hunting the burned areas along the bear creek road. I was hoping to atleast see some does moving through there but there wasn't much :'(. The second morning I went to a meadow of of the Blacktail Mt. Cutoff road which is right where I saw the Big Guy the evening before, but I didn't see anything. I heard a lot of shooting and it seemed most of it was coming from the main entrance on Bear Creek Rd. right next to the privite land, I was going to go in there but there were about 5 trucks there already so i didn't bother.
Moe,
I did see one scrape in the same area I saw the big buck. I found it very interesting that I couldn't find a single rub though :dunno:.
I don't know maybe I'm not looking in the right areas??? This was my first time doing the late hunt and I will be back, this was just a very frusterating hunt because i expected so much more. :(

It was a hard winter last year. Remember we had three feet of snow for several months, some areas had lots more. I think there was a nearly 80% winter kill in parts of NE WA. Other areas the deer survived pretty well.
-
I saw an old scrape, but also no rubs. I was hunting Starvation Flats, around a big bowl off the side of the road. I have knee problems so i can't go to far at the moment. Lots of sign, some fresh.
-
Sucked for us too above Rice. We did finally connect. Dad is 67 so took a doe on Saturday, and I took a 10" long spike on Sunday. We usually see much more deer. These were the only two whitetail we saw all weekend.
We did find about 15 Muleys a day though. Some monster forkies and one massive 4x4 with gnarley bases and 6" eye guards. Figures we would see him now........
Saw a few rubs and scrapes, but rutting activity in general was nil.
-
Moe,
Saw lots of scrapes and a few rubs but we were pretty far north (between Northport and Ione). Saturday the scrapes were getting freshened pretty hard. I personally think the peak of the rut will be over by the end of this week - maybe early next. Might be able to catch a bruiser lookin for that last doe.
-
I was there Friday thru Sunday and saw a couple of bucks in thick brush and no shot.Alot of road hunters and saw two deer killed.
-
Hunt the lower elevations. Many of the yearlings died. So there are less young bucks and the older ones are making mistakes with the rut in full swing. We had our luck from 6:40 - 7:30 am and 3:30 - 4:30 pm. Out of three of us we saw 7 bucks and harvested 5 out of Pende Oreille and Bonner counties. Good luck and get into a spot at 6 am and sit still near a trail. They're movin' around until around 8 am.
Two of our bucks were around 5 years old and from 225 to 250#s.
-
Alot of 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 yr old bucks, lost alot of the older bucks last year, nothing like yrs past around here for big bucks hitting the ground know of 2 all year archery kills that were around 170 and thats it, bad year, seen only 1 rifle kill that was exceptional, lost alot of deer last year, next year looks promising if winter isnt brutal
-
Talked to one of the guys still at camp last night and he said the rut is kickin in to high gear. There are scrapes everywhere you look but nothing moving during the day yet. Still no deer down, and today is the last day. He also talked to a game warden that stopped by camp and the gw said he had talked to approx. 200 hunters and seen only 5 deer taken.
As a side note, the Emperess of our camp was walking an old road and she saw a Grizzly walk onto the road in front of her (less than 100yds). He stood on his hind legs and she turned and went back to camp (she was less than 300 yds from camp). Her husband and cousin went up there later but all they found was a pile of Emperess sh*t.
-
Figures the rut would really kick in when I had to quit the season and go back to work. Always happens that way in one form or another. Not a total loss, but not a deer I would normally want to take, but decided on the meat at the end of Sunday.
-
Congrats! With the number of bucks seen this year by everyone I'd say you did fine. At least were eating venision instead of tag soup ;)
-
Good job DeKuma. I had a spike in my sights on Saturday and if I had been given a better shot I'd have gladly taken him. Things were tough and you got meat in the freezer.
-
Just uploaded the pictures of the buck from my previous post. Here he is. From the report from everybody else, my roommate should feel VERY fortunate.
-
We stuck it out in one general area because there was lots of rut sign. We had lots of rubs and 3 or 4 scrapes that were being freshened every night. We were sitting on the trail between the rubs and the thick stuff before daylight in the morning and until after dark every night but never did see the buck that made the scrapes moving. Thought it would be better to work where we knew there was a buck instead of moving around all over hell trying to find one. So long story short, where we were, that buck was rutting heavy, just no does around to draw him out it seemed. :dunno:

Next time set up a decoy or two and spray it down with doe estrous. Be super carefull though. You don't want to be in the line of fire if someone shoots at your decoy.

i was in springdale area and saw 3 white tail bucks in 2 days morniings, 1 was a 7 point my brother took it , 1 was a 10 point i wanted to take it but it was on private prop. i tried calling him out but wouldnt come and other wasa 2 point, i went scounting higher for next years mule hunt and saw 6 mule bucks,
-
I think you might be from the East coast. A 10 point is extremely rare. Was it a 5x5. Otherwise that was some specimen. I'd love to see one.

Well for me it was the worst deer hunting in 30 years. I hunted hard between Springdale and Hunters and in 12 days of hunting I saw a doe and a yearling. :yike: I have gone a day or two in years past without seeing a deer but never 10 straight days, I'm completly shocked. I did not see near the sign I normally do, did find a couple of scrapes and a couple of rubs. I did not scout as much this year so stuck to areas I have had good luck in the past few years and nothing. I'm wore down to a frazzle. Hopefully the late archery elk will go a little better!! I spoke to another guy and he hunted for 10 days and saw three bucks, but no does at all.

wow 30 years than i must have done good for hunting as a first in that area and first time hunting white tail, i saw 3 bucks in 2 days, and only 4 does, one of the bucks my brother took and another buck was a big boy he was mine BUT he was on private property >:(

Got word from the guys who returned from camp yesterday. We had a total of 10 hunters in camp this year (for varying lengths of time) and we tagged one three point.
We did see 13 elk - including a nice 6x6 - 1 moose, and 1 grizzly but none of them taste very good on the hoof.
Hope next year is better.

This has been one of the worst hunting season we have had in awhile over here for whitetails, just from reading everyones posts and the people I have talked too.The late archery season started and it has by far been the worst opening 4 days I have ever had since I began bowhunting 17 yrs ago.Talked to quite a few locals in the archery store and all have had similiar complaints, just a lack of deer.Mica is much better my dad is hunting it and seeing quite a few bucks, but nothing over the 110 mark, but 1. I have seen a spike, fork horn and a handfull of does, did pass on a 130 5x5 on the first evening, might be kicking myself at the end of the year ,but oh well, cant tag a hawg by shooting a lesser deer. ;)
-
I have the same to report. I've hunted the same ridge on private property in the Huckleberry unit every year since 1977. This was the worst year I can ever remember.
I hunted every legal minute of four days and was at my stands each morning well before dawn. My daughter, a skilled and patient hunter hunted the same way for two days.
Between us we saw ZERO whitetails, not one. Not a flag, not a snort, not a thump-thump-thump of a spooked deer. Usually, we see multiple deer each day.
The landowner believes that coyote depredation has been a big factor in addition to the harsh winter last year.
-
I wouldnt blame coyotes, always coyotes around, dont have winters like that every year, well not since 1949 had we had a winter snow accumulation of that amount. I would venture to say 40%-60% of the deer were lost in most areas and some reports in extreme NE Wa and pend orielle county lost up to 80% of the deer.
-
Yes there is always yotes, but they mostly only have us as predators to them. When the snow becomes deep and if it crust they become a big problem! I have seen them run together like wolves and they become a killing machine. You can point your finger at the bad winter but that only helps the predators, when they got allot of food they are only going to multiply, kinda a snowball affect. So do your part get out and smoke you some yotes this year! :twocents:
-
I shoot them year round around the house, usually end up smoking about 10 a year
