Title: East Coast Winter Kill
Post by: huntnphool on February 13, 2014, 03:39:56 PM: With all this snow/ice hitting the East, what do you guys think is going to be the result of the winter kill?

Post by: jackelope on February 13, 2014, 03:45:49 PM: My little brother in PA has gotten 56" of snow in 2014 as of this afternoon. That's a lot of snow. Winter kill is a concern there for sure. There's no "winter range" there like we have out west. I don't remember it being a big issue where I grew up but honestly I don't think I was paying too much attention at that point in my life. We did get a lot of snow there every winter so it wasn't uncommon to have 12-24" of snow on the ground for long periods of time.

Where I'm from in WI, the deer would yard up when the snow gets deep to trample down the snow to get to the feed. The only times we had bad winter kill, was when the deep snow stuck around into mid-march. They should be OK if this crap doesn't persist.

They also browse the tree limbs and eat the ends off all them if they can't get to the feed on the ground. It's not the best nutrition but it keeps them going when needed.

My buddy texted me this morning. They got 20" in 24 hours.
