Title: Over calling
Post by: wariner87 on March 01, 2014, 07:42:43 AM: Once I have called a turkey in and have his attention ( I guess when the decoy has his attention). Would any calling past that point make him weary ?
I had one mount my decoy last year for a sec then I called and he split .

Post by: Hangfire on March 01, 2014, 09:56:46 AM: Once a bird sees my decoy, when I use one. I do not call any more. I feel that would only be bring attention to where i am. If the gobbler is at the decoy he should be in range. A slight cluck to get him to lift his head would be all I might do. I have found over the years that I have reduced my calling by probably 75%. When I have a bird coming in and he gets within 100 yards (probably not visible) I stop calling, unless he hangs up. The bird knows where I am and I don't wont to bring my exact location knowledge to him.

Post by: SB on March 01, 2014, 02:11:28 PM: Once you know he is committed it is best to put down the call. They can pinpoint your location of calling from hundreds of yards away. I compare it to duck hunting, if their winds are set and coming into your spread, don't call and let the birds finish.

This will bet second year turkey hunting and I'll be trying the N.E corner this time around . Last year was much more of a learning experience than anything to be honest. After reading about their eye sight I got to see first hand how keen they are on picking up on movement.

Post by: BOWHUNTER45 on March 01, 2014, 05:08:08 PM: without blabbing off to much I would say once you learn how to read the bird then you can do what you think is best ...sometimes I call loud and aggressively and other times I call soft ...just depends on how the bird is responding ...I like to try and fire a bird up ..get him gobbling and do not let up ...especially earlier in the season ..I think I have killed more birds being aggressive ...If I was in PA or somewhere back east I would do more of the silent treatment :twocents:

Post by: turkeyfeather on March 01, 2014, 05:54:56 PM: It depends on the situation for me, but for the most part once I see the bird I stop calling. Especially if it's at my deke. Unless however it's not the bird I want. I have had some fun over the years screwing with them. :chuckle:

Post by: kevinlisa06 on March 01, 2014, 06:39:16 PM: For the most part I'm an aggressive caller. It just depends on the bird ur calling in. I have yet to call in a bird while using a deke so I can't say anything towards that. Normally don't have enough time to set one up when we get into position.

By the way, I will be doing a 2 hr free turkey clinic at Cabelas-Tulalip on Sat. Mar 15th form noon to 2pm if intereted ... since seating is limited, pre-register to reserve a spot @ 360-474-4880.

I will try to make it , lord knows I could use the help.
