Title: tikka t3 7mm rem mag
Post by: bigduckdaddy on March 01, 2014, 09:05:26 AM
Been thinking about getting a new rifle for a while now and was leaning towards this little beauty. Just wanted to hear the good the bad and the ugly. Looking to use as an all around gun. From dogs to bears no longer than 1000 yards. May try to stretch that at a range though. Accessories prices? What are you guys using and seeing?

Many tikka owners here. You will be hard pressed to find someone who does not like them. For there price point they are the best gun out there. You will get 2 things from people who don't like them 1: cheap stock 2: cheap magazine. Both of which can be replaced and there is plenty of options now days to do so. You won't hear that they shoot bad. Even people that hate them "yet have never owned them " will say they can't argue with how well they can shoot.

I liked my tikka 300wsm enough to put a b&c stock and husky blue diamond on it. Its a repeat long and close range killer. The 7mm cartridge you are thinking about is another of my favs. for hunting. Should be a great combo.

For what its worth, I have a Tikka T3 in the .300 WSM and put a 4.5 x 14 Leupold on it and love the set up.  My dad has been shooting a Remington in the 7 MM Mag since he bought it the first year the 700 BDL came out in 7 MM Mag (I think it was 1962).  I don't think you can go wrong with the combination of the Tikka and the 7 MM Mag.  Good luck and enjoy shooting long and straight!

Tikka   I take the Tikka haters as a compliment to the Tikka as they perceive the threat and rightfully so.

I think it was 1962 when the 7 mm rem came cuz I was in college and a rich friend of mine bought one for $155.  I bought mine a year lATER AND REPLACED IT ABOUT 5 YEARS ago with a tikka 25-06 and luv it.  the 7 got to heavy cuz I am old.   mike w

T3 lite or superlite is the best value in its price range.  7mm RM if you want flat shooting.  30-06 if you want a little bigger hole.  7-08 if you want a little more pleasant range time with it.  :)

All three of my t3's will drive tacks, no matter the scope setups I've had on over the years. Currently 22-250 blued 4-12x40 vx2, many coyotes and bobcat, 300wsm s.s. 4.5-14x50 lr, deer dead in tracks more times than not, and finally a trusty 30-06 Burris 3-9x40 s.s. just for backup. Mags are a slight downfall at 62 $ each but I have nothing bad to say about the t3 line. As far as calibers go I haven't been around too many 7's that hadn't killed game. No shot is repeatable so to compare shot to shot is pointless, however some calibers are known for killing in front and crippling behind. Be confident in your skill with the given weapon and learn from past experiences.

I have a tikka in 300wm and love it, put a brake and a limbsaver on it and it shoots like a 243. Plan on adding a b and c stock this summer

While the Tikka T3 is one heck of a good gun and the 7mm is capable I think your kidding yourself if you think you'll be killing bear at 1,000 yards plus with one.  Even with after market stock and $2,000 glass I'd never take a 1,000 yard shot at a bear with a Tikka.  Not even on a perfect day.  That's best left for TV shows targeted to sell bullets and custom rifles.

I'm not even sure I'd take that shot with a 27" RBros.  Well, Maybe...if I was Jim the Plumber ;)

Would rather have my 338 Edge than a 7mm dor a 1,000 yard bear! But really, my bear last year was 15 yrds with a 300 ultra! Will be chasing them with my new ancient Spirits 58" longbow this year! Time to put the "hunting",  back into hunting!!

@ RadSav
Would you take a 1000yard shot at a yote with the T3 7mm straight outta the box?

I'd probably want to sight it in first :chuckle:

That's a tough question!  One I'm not sure I can answer honestly :dunno:

I'd like to think I wouldn't. But I don't always follow my best judgment so it could happen, I guess.  ;)

@RadSav I agree with sighting it in. And im just getting started with long range shooting but at that distance isnt about shot placement and not the animal necessarily? I can take my old 30-06 and confidently take animals at 300yards. I'm not trying to offend you or anyone and I plan a big learning curve with this long range stuff. But is confidence a big factor in long range shooting?

The only difference between 100 yards and a 1000 yards. Is a little math, it's much easier than most people that haven't done it think. Load up a bunch and get some trigger time and you should be good to go.

I definitely plan on some trigger time and loading my own rounds as well.

:yeah: to a point. One the math is done and you are actually shooting the basics still apply. You aim ans shoot the same for 100 yards as 1000 yards. Wind can be a killer tho.  :chuckle: I am not claiming to be a dead shot at any ranges but have knocked some steel at 1k. It is very fun and a rush! I strive for hitting a 1 moa target within 3 shots amd preferably on the first. Lots of trigger time with consistent loads will get you there.

I'm a big Tikka fan, think they're great for the money and own a T3 Lite SS in 270WSM.  It is a shooter for sure.

However, I would not even begin to consider it as a 1000 yard gun.  If I was looking at setting up a gun for a possible 1K shot, I'd start with a good Rem 700 action and get to know a good gunsmith.  Or talk to a custom gun builder (Rbros, etc.) about a build.  And I'm not a Remington fan by any stretch of the imagination.

Confidence is a big factor.  And the only way to get there is to shoot distance often.  But you have to be honest with yourself as to how accurate you and your gun is.  Are you and your gun really MOA shooters?  Was that 1/2" group at 100 yards the exception or the rule?

Now if you and the gun are MOA shooters that means you have the capability of shooting 10" at 1,000 yards in theory.  Add to that the effects of environment, excitement, the thickness of your crosshairs, your ability to divide and center, measure wind, load variation and the adjustability of your scope.  Those things are now magnified by a factor of AT LEAST ten.  Few people can then take a 1 MOA gun and turn it into a 10" group at 1,000.  Most are lucky if they can turn it into a 2 MOA target at 1,000.

But heck, it's dang fun to shoot 1,000 yards!  Get out there and honestly evaluate you and your guns ability at 1,000.  If that gun is a Tikka so what!  You may find it's only a reasonable 500 yard gun for big game.  At least you know and have had some serious fun on the way to figuring that out.  And you will probably become a more consistent 500 yard shooter as a result.

1/2" Moa Out of a stock savage or from any of the top custom makers, is still 1/2" Moa  and translates and prints as such at 1000.

Bighammer, we know you have had success with sporting/hunting guns at long range. So I keep meaning to ask you - What glass are you using on those lighter sporting guns?

To that point, 1/2 MOA out of a Tikka is still 1/2 MOA.   Hell, there's probably even a marlin on the shelf of some gunshop out there that shoots 1/2 MOA with factory CoreLokts and nobody knows it yet.   Bullet doesn't care what gun it was shot out of.

For a 1000 yard gun, though, I wouldn't want a flyweight mountain rifle.

On the sporter weights for hunting. Other than a Nikon 6.5-20. 20 or so years ago I have run just Leupold. 4.5-14LR, 6.5-20 LR, 8.5-25 LR, Mk4 16x's several 6-18's with M1 turrets. With a accasional NightForce on the heavies. My deal is. I'm only sentimental with a handful of guns & optics. When it comes to rifles and handguns. Nothing is safe in my safe. They come and they go, optics and rifles. My moods and likes change rather quickly. Sometimes a rifle takes so long to be built. I've lost interest by the time it shows up and I'm off to something else. I've enjoyed taking game with a large variety of cartridges over the years.

I agree with what your saying and can't answer a couple of questions you have for me. This rifle is going to be a starting point for me to find out what the rifle and more importantly myself am capable of. If I do have to change caliber to get to 1000yard shots. Its going to be an awesome time figuring out what I can do.

The 7mm will do it.  It's a question of whether you can with a lightweight sporting gun.  Again, I think the Tikka and the 7mm are great choices for hunting.  And for an inexpensive starter long range gun there are worse ways to go.  But the Tikka is not really what I would consider a long range weapon.  Even if you do get a good one that will shoot sub groups at 100 yards.  It's going to be fun finding out, that's for sure

No one has mentioned trigger pull. It is very important to have a crisp light trigger for long range. Your pulse alone can move you off target at 1000 yds. Pulling a 5 lb trigger at 1000 yds can move you 5 '. There is a huge difference between my 2 long range guns. 1 has a 1lb 15 oz trigger and 1 has a 2.2 lb trigger. Doesnt sound like alot but it is very noticable at shots between 1000 and 1767.
