The 08 regs say that Alkali 371 is open for Elk until Jan 20th. Is this just for Master Hunters?
-
I never paid attention to this before, but 371 is open to modern, arch and muzzy until Jan 20th. Why is just this one GMU open? I emailed WDFW but they haven't responded yet.

Its the YTC.

It sounded like the YTC was sure firing last night! I could hear and feel it from my home west of Moses Lake. They shoot a few times a month right now. From what I know, it is all closed up do to training! After listening to some of the night's of shelling, would not want to be there!

Only master hunter hunt for elk
-
they shut down this unit this year due to training. :(
-
not for master hunters
-
Anyone closer to Vantage or Yakima hear this training going on at night or am I on crack? Not sure what els I would be hearing. I would be supprised if they are letting anyone one the YTC this year.

WDFW responded and said it was for master hunters only and it was open. I've never really cared about being a master hunter but now I'm curious about what the pro vs cons are. I'm going to send another post.

Next year theres gonna be some monster bucks out there, and I should draw the tag since My buddy and I have 17 points between the two of us.

Yep - Master Hunters only. I've hunted it for elk the past few years at different times between Aug-Jan. It's a crap shoot, really- sometimes the elk are there, sometimes they are not. If they are not, its a wasted trip (IMO).
You need to check in, register your rifle, watch a safety video, preselect the sub area in the unit and then ask permission to move to another. It's not hard to drive and glass most of the areas- ton's of access roads if you have a decent 4x4, and you do see some DANDY local mulies in the sage.
I gave it up after a few tries- seemed like a lot of work for cows- archery and muzzleloading 371 is difficult at best. There are probably better 'any elk' options for archers and muzzleloaders.
Oh yeah- Learn from my experience and stay on the gravel roads if it rains or snows. :bdid:
I didn't like the red tape, and the lack of trees isn't my style, but some guys do produce every year at YTC. You can always stop in and check out the success clip board- they record all the elk kill dates, times, and sub areas, and leave that info on the front counter. If you are local, you can check out the reports every day or so and just hit it when it starts to heat up.
Hope that helps.
