Title: Montana ( rougheye )
Post by: rougheye on November 19, 2008, 06:27:12 PM
Well , trip started out near Anaconda for elk . To keep things short ill just say we saw elk every day , lots of wolf tracks and the weather was hot . After 4 days we decided to go for deer in eastern MT and maybe hit it on the way back if they got some weather .  We did see some nice moose including this Bullwinkle .

We got to our area that after noon and had just enough time to get an evening drive in . We saw some nice bucks that evening including one tall 3 point with about ten does . The next morning we drove up into the national forest to find an area to camp . As soon as we entered the National forest we stopped seeing deer and started seeing more hunters . We got to a nice camp spot and i noticed something hopping out in a field . I let the air out of him  :chuckle:

That evening we went for a hike and found out MT is just like WA . If you get 1/2  mile off the road there are deer everywhere . That night we some nice bucks in the 18 - 22 inch range but decided to pass .  The next day we went for a drive to look for some BLM land .  After 1 1/2 hours of driving and seeing nothing but big bucks and orange fence posts  we were dying to get somewhere where we could hunt , thats when we ran into another rig coming down the road .  I recognized it right away from this sight and the WA plates confirmed it . It was huntinphool , M-ray and WD70 .  We talked for a minute then went our seperate ways . After reading the moose posts i  felt like i was meeting hunting celebrities   :chuckle:  .   Anyway huntinphool was nice enough to tell us there was some public land up the road so we headed for it . We saw some nice bucks on it but nothin we wanted just yet .       Next day we hunted hard and talked to alot of ranchers , we finally got permission to hunt one small ranch . That evening we saw some nice bucks including one nice 5 point with heavy dark horns , if i had to guess he wou
ld go about 25 " or more  , problem was he was missing 1 side right above his eyeguard .

Next day my partner got frustrated and said , If that buck in the state land is there ill shoot him today so away we went . When we got there we saw the deer but they were on the private land  bu working there way to us . He waited till he thought it was legal and shot . 265 yards and a double lunger . first deer down .

For the next 2 days i passed on many bucks , I never saw the one , at least on public land .  That night we decided to get a room in town and try a good hike in area in the morning .  When we woke up we realized we were screwed , it rained all night and if you have ever been to eastern MT , you know you cant go on very many dirt roads when it is wet , the mud is gumbo . So i decided i was going to kill a buck that morning and i had seen a tall 4 point the last 2 days . I got him and we left , still no weather for elk so we went home . They arnt the biggest deer but we met a lot of people and learned alot of area ,  HAD A BALL .
