Title: Deadly Dick fishing lures
Post by: MatthewHunter98 on March 21, 2014, 08:34:48 PM
I have ben exploring some lures that would be new to me, and I heard that the deadly dicks do a pretty good job for ling cod, any of you fellas ever used deadly dicks for Lings? how has your luck been, or what other fish have you had bite them!

Never tried  Deadly Dicks- don't typically see them for sale- heard they're big in Canada. On their website the heaviest one they make is less than 4 oz. and like 9$. That pretty expensive for a lightish ling jig imo.

Caught plenty of lings on "dart" type lures. If lings will eat a leaded pipe they will eat about anything.

I use 3 to 5 oz lead head jigs and twister tails, seems to be the most cost effective lure since a person tends to lose some in the rocks.  I buy my jigs at Wholesale Sports and my tails at Sportco.  If you decide to use jigs, instead of a single hook off the bottom, you might try two hooks off the top, they make specially rigged hooks for this.

Lead head jigs with plastic tails (rootbeer as well as white) and darts (white) have worked well for me over the years shop around you can usually get components and build your own cheaper. I have never heard of the jigs you mentioned, but if dances around on the bottom a ling will most likely grab it. As mentioned $9 a jig gets expensive if a guy loses 4-5 in a season which can happen  :twocents:

it does not take much to catch a ling once you know where they are.  good boat, good equipment , good electronics and good experience  equals good ling.   at $9 the catch might be you.    mike w

4-5 a season? We will lose 6-10 a day in Neah Bay.  Pipe jigs get real spendy, real quick.

The Deadly Dick (for some reason it feels a little funny typing that name again) looks like a Kast-master spoon only longer and narrower and made out of  thicker metal, making it similar to a "dart" type jig. I've heard they use them in BC quite a bit for salmon, etc. - guess they fish them like a buzz bomb.

I'm sure they would work. When salmon is open there are some spots where I prefer using a dart type jig. Every once in awhile a big king picks it up when fishing for lings/bottomfish.

The deadly dick is made in BC canada and for sure a well known lure to the canadian fisherman! I have typically as mentioned used mainly the white and root beer gulp worm lead head jigs, and very true about as long as you are on top of good structure and do some good jibing the lings will for sure be interested, i may just have to buy a few Deadly's and just try them out for jigging salmon, rock fish lings, ill just test them out i guess!

I knew we'd see something like that on this thread sooner or later :chuckle: What would your buddies say when you whipped that out?
