Title: Dayton Spring Bear
Post by: beardown on March 31, 2014, 10:50:28 AM
Heading over this spring to hunt in Dayton.  I know it doesn't usually get good til later, but just curious if anyone has seen what the snow levels are at.

Looks like there's still plenty of snow in the Blues...

You going to have some time to shed hunt before you head over there? Miah and I went for a hike yesterday but still too much snow.

The lower end is wide open now.  The 46 road will stay closed to non track vehicles until 5/1.

Been over a couple times and have seen a few bears, but trying to find a blonde.  Does anyone know anything about the Broughton Land Company?  They have a TON of property over there that is posted.  Does anyone know if they give permission to hunt or have contact info?  I know its a longshot but gotta try!

You used be able to buy access on their wheat ground,no Idea how much $$ and they did/do have an office in downtown Dayton (I havn't paid attention for awhile, I got fed up with the modern firearm zoo over there). Hope that helps

I'm pretty sure that the chunk you're referring to is hunted by their employees only. They do have an office in Dayton on main street. Plenty of bears on that piece.

It seems that your unit doesn't have as many blondes as others nearby. They're generally easier to spot and people are more apt to shoot a smaller blonde than other phases. There are a few though. Have fun and good luck!

No access to Broughton mountain ground.

Thanks for the info.  The ground is pretty limited to public hunting, but I will have to make do.  Going for a blonde for now, but we will see what happens.  Still got a few weeks left and it should get better everyday.

this coming weekend should be about as good as your going to get, between bear activity and quality of hide.  I would say out of the last 40 plus bears I've seen in that unit only three were blonde and one of those a mature boar.  Good luck and take lots of pics.  And like others said no access to their riveted ground employees only.

Had a good time and passed on a few nicer bears trying to get a blonde.  Went into this weekend with full intentions of filling my tag, so I did just that.  Not the biggest, but I am happy.

Nice job. I still haven't seen a bear yet. We saw a lot of scat though.

Nice, I'm amazed at how many color phase bears have been taken this year.

There's a common theme with most of the color bears that have been posted.

 ;)
