Title: Muzzy Elk Down (A good seaon getting even better)
Post by: Dameion on November 22, 2008, 10:40:15 PM
4 out of our 7 man hunting party have offically tagged out this year as my dad dropped a nice 5x5 bull in the Coweeman today.  He doesn't get on the computer much and never been on the site, but i figured I would share the abbreviated story as I heard it this afternoon.  1st of all, 3 of us being tagged out and the 3 others having prior obligations this weekend, dad was on a solo mission.

He ran a few cuts at first light and didn't see a thing.  Took a spur we often hit in late season to pound a little timber.  He parks the truck, gets all his gear set, and sets up for a nice little jaunt through the particular patch of timber.  Just as he starts to step in timber he glances about 150 yards up the road and sees what appears to be an elks ass on the edge of the road.  Dad proceeds to put the sneak on and gets to about 70 yards and hunkers down out of site.  It appears the the elk is solo and has head down in some brush feeding. After a couple of minutes he lifts his head and what do you know....it's a bull.  Bull is standing broadside at an estimated 70 yards away, dad takes the shot.  Said everything felt great, to his suprise the bull doesn't move, turns and looks at him, but doesn't move.  So dad takes a couple steps back and gets out of site to reload, gets loaded and steps back into site...now the elk is standing broadside in the road, looking the other direction.  Dad takes aim again and fires....once again, the elk doesn't move....At this point dad is just dumbfounded, felt both of his shots were true and had no clue what was going on.  He begins to reload and the elk falls over!  What a relief!  He says it gets back up and staggers about 40 yards off the road where dad puts the final shot in!

Dad was solo, but managed to pull the bull to the road with the truck and I would like to thank the two men that drove up and helped him load it whole!

Now the bad news, he takes out his camera to get some field shots and the batteries are dead  :(.

I do have a few shots they got of the head in the cooler, but with all of the critisism I have seen for graphic pictures that include blood etc., I figured it might be better to not include pictures of the head since the pictures also include the quarters hanging in the walk in cooler.

Anyone that wants to see the rack from a dandy Coweeman 5x5 send me a PM.

Good job Pops!!

Congrats to your dad. Elkhunting solo can be a very challenging task once the metal hits the meat.

Congrats to your Dad.  I bagged elk hunting this year because I would have had to go solo.  No problem hunting them alone, just getting them out by yourself.

Yea, getting them out solo is typically some serious work!!!  However typically not a big concern with our group, as a cell phones call can usually get a number of locals we know to help if needed.  I think this was more of a pride thing though  :)....Wanted to show the kids how to do it  ;)

Thats a nice bull

I gotta agree with coho

Theres been probably 20 people that killed decent bulls this year and didnt keep nor sell the cape.

Hell...I did a post looking for one...I would have paid 100$ for that bulls cape and most taxi's would pay 75-150 depending on the bull size..

michelle nelson says just bring it by and she will do the final caping if ya dont know how??

any way

nice bull

thanks for posting!

Dameion we need to get your dad to smile and not look so curious when he kills elk
like that great bull. I think the other pictures would have been fine too.
