Title: Urethane coating on a tarp
Post by: pd on April 06, 2014, 09:18:58 PM
Please give me some advice.

My beloved tarp (not the blue/grey thing you buy from Costco) needs some TLC.  It is a 5m x 5m (269^ft) awning type tarp, and has been with me through thick and thin.  The undercoating (urethane) has completely faded away, and no longer provides water-proof protection.  The result is rain dripping through the fabric.

I could purchase a new tarp from the manufacturer (in Japan) for $270.  I would like to simply apply a urethane coating to the underside, and give my tarp a few more years of use.  But I can't find urethane in the quantity that I need (and, at the price that is required).  Any ideas?

Ya know...a hiking forum I used to be on had a tutorial where a guy mixed silicone and something...like paint thinner or ?.... Anyway, he was able to effectively re coat tent floors etc and re-water proof them with this mix. As I recall, it was a royal pain in the behind to get mixed. But applied easy with a mini roller.

You are killing me.  "To get to Johnson's house, just go down that road 2 or 10 miles, and turn left or right and then...."  Come on, Iceman, mix silicone with WHAT?  Where is this tutorial??

But, thanks for any help.  I really want to save this tarp.   :hello:
