Any 300 Weatherby Magnum Fans here?
Anyone know what the going rate on a used Mark 5 is these days?
I'm thinking on using these 200 Grain TSX Barnes.
I bought a lot of 1200 projectiles at an estate auction a few years ago.

I'd think a guy could find a used Sporter model for around 1,000-1,200. Or a Deluxe for about $500 more.
I know two guys who recently bought the Vanguard Series 2 stainless in 300 Weatherby new for just over $750. Both are really liking it!

I have one. Don't know if I am a fan or not. I bought a Vanguard S-2 at a friends of the NRA banquet last fall. I have shot it 26 times. It hits pretty good at 100 and 200 yards. It is guaranteed to shoot MOA. I just don't think I am a MOA shooter. Maybe with practice I can be. Recoil is heavy! I guess if I am going to keep it I will have to learn how to manage the recoil with out the flinch. I paid $510 for it. That's about what I have seen them for sale for at Bobs in Longview.

I shoot the caliber, but not in a Weatherby platform.
Lots of punch, easy to get to shoot well. You just work up to max and let it run.
200's will hit very hard.
I have the Mark V in other calibers, it is a great action. You can spend anywhere form $1-$1.5k to get into a used one that is in great shape. Most of them are heavy, compared to your typical Rem 700. An ultralight in 300 is a good choice but is not for the recoil shy.

My dad and I have been weatherby fans for some time. The 300 is a great caliber, and with a brake they recoil very little.
If you're looking for a used one, I know my dad was just talking about selling one of his, this one is an ultra lightweight mark V, he was asking me yesterday what I thought it was worth so if you're interested let me know.
I'm in the process of working up loads for mine, I just had it rebarreled by benchmark. The 200 grain accubonds are looking very promising so far

Thanks but I prefer them Ultra Heavy. Recoil ;)

Great gun one of my favorites, Expensive to shoot but what do you do? I have a break on mine and my girlfriend shoots it very well. I have never had to look for any lost game with it almost to much gun.

Great cartridge, I have one of then German Mark V's and it shoots great, plus the recoil is manageable with a brake. The Mark V is a great gun, and you can't go wrong with the 300 Magnum.

I love the cartridge and have had many different rifles in 300 Weatherby, my longtime favorite is a Remington 700 KS with a KDF brake with NP3 finish, the gun has been to Alalska, BC, ALberta, Sask., and all over the US. It's accounted for everything from Coues deer to Moose, with Deer, Elk Goat,Bear amongst others. It is a great cartridge and I have had great luck with 165 gr. Ballistic tips. Flat shooting and hard hitting. Recoil with the brake is one of the softer shooting rifles I own, 270 kicks harder.....
Great Cartridge......

:yeah:
I agree, my 257 kicks harder than my 300, without a doubt.
One of the best (and easiest) improvements I've made to mine was installing a Timney trigger. The factory 5 pound trigger was a bit too much for me to shoot consistently with.

I purchased one of the very first Wby Accumarks in 300wby mag to hit town when the Accumarks first came out. It was EASILY the most accurate off the shelf rifle I have EVER owned which was a very welcomed surprise since the MkV 7mm Wby Mag I had before that, shot 100yd groups that looked more like it was shot from a shotgun than a rifle. lol
My 300wby Accumark would shoot just about any 180gr bullet I fed it, very well. Sub MOA groups, usually 1/2-3/4, at 100yds with 180's was pretty easy.
I 100% agree the 257wby mag feels as though it kicks more than the 300's do. My dad and one of my best friends, both had MkV 257wby and when I shot their 257's they had kind of a nasty sharp bite to the recoil. I'm sure my unbraked 300wby w'180's had a much higher calculated recoil but it gave you more of a thump and the 257's was a hard sting. I've noticed the same thing when shooting a 270wsm vs 300wsm. The 270wsm always feels like it kicks much harder.

I think that it is a great manufacturer and caliber. If you are worried about recoil put a brake on it. 7 African animals dall sheep, moose, elk it does it all.
-
Cojones for the 300 Wby I have not. Owned one for a few months. Shot it once at the range. Sold it. Made the recoil of my .300 Win Mag feel like a popgun. I think it's all about stock fit. I had one of those little Remington 600's in .243 that turned my shoulder purple. I keep going back to the ought-six for deer and a 7 mm Rem. Mag. for Elk.

I have a 300 WBy for sale if you're still looking for one:

I have an old style vanguard in 300 Weatherby. It will shoot 1 inch groups and probably better with the right shooter behind it. They are NOT for the recoil sensitive shooter. My 25'06s are fun to shoot and my 300 is not, but it simply puts animals down. I have harvested many deer and bear with this gun using 180gr. nosler partitions and barnes TSX, and I have only had 1 animal take a single step after being shot. All the energy and velocity just puts the animals down. The TSX's also cause very little meat damage as they don't fragment.
